New Years Resolutions

1. No more soft drinks. (Unless they're being used as a mixer on the rare occasions where I go out to a bar.) I lasted almost six months last year; let's see if I can last the entire year in 2012. Juice, milk, water, and tea (lots and lots of tea) are my friends.

2. Pay off my credit cards. It's going to take at least another year to pay off the balance on my APCU card, but I should be able to get the others paid off this year if I'm careful with my budget. And, hey, a steady paycheck means that I can actually create a budget that doesn't involve lots of guesswork as to how much money I'll actually make each month.

3. Lose ten pounds. Yes, yes, yes. I know that I'm far from being overweight, as so many of you keep telling me whenever I mention that I want to lose a few pounds. I'm very much still in the average range for my height and body type. The weight I'd be if I lost ten pounds is the weight that I'm most comfortable with being, though, hence me wanting to get back down to it. I'm good at holding at the same weight once I get there; it's just the losing the pounds to get there in the first place that's hard for me.

4. Eat more fruits and vegetables. I'm a lot better than I used to be, but I still have a way to go. Drinking lots of juice and water instead of soft drinks is helping, but I really need to eat whole fruits and vegetables even if my taste buds don't like a lot of them. (That's one of the curses of growing up in a household where we didn't have a lot of fruits and vegetables during meals; if you don't get a taste for them as a kid, it's hard to get used to them once you're older.) There have to be some that I like out there! I just have to experiment a bit until I find them.

5. Cook on a regular basis. I've basically stopped cooking, because A. my work schedule was extremely weird and hectic for awhile there and B. on the rare occasion that I was off work both of the roommates were working. Now that I'm going to be working regular hours (and therefore actually be home for dinner unless I have plans), I really need to get back in the habit.

6. Exercise more. They have a small gym set up here at the apartment complex now, so I really don't have any excuse not to excercise at least a few days a week. Especially since I'm (finally!) going to have a regular schedule that won't change from day to day and week to week. If I can set aside a specific time to exercise each day, I know that I'm more likely to actually do it.

7. Attend worship services every Sunday morning. Theoretically, it should be a lot easier to actually get out of bed in the morning when I'm not at work until 2am the night before. I'm going to try my best to attend regularly again; it really hasn't bothered me to be without organized religion as a whole, but I have missed the community being a member of a church provides.

8. Go to the dentist for regular check-ups. As soon as I get the money together to pay for it, I really want to start going to the dentist again. I know for a fact that I have at least one small cavity that needs filled (well, I'm pretty sure it's an old filling that's worn through; but still, I can definitely feel it sometimes), and there are probably at least one or two more problems spots that I haven't noticed yet. *crosses fingers* I'm hoping to be able to go by July, at the latest.

9. Clean out my closet (and, honestly, my room in general). I have a decent amount of clothes in my closet, but I'd say a good 80-85% of them either don't fit me or aren't anything I'd wear. (A lot of them were things I bought when I was doing my student teaching; they're appropriate for making a 21-year-old look more like a teacher than a student, but they're not really anything I'd wear for any reason other than that.) I really want to get rid of anything I don't wear, just so I can see how little I actually own when it comes to clothes. And then I'm going to have to go shopping, since I have approximately two outfits in my entire wardrobe that are appropriate for my new job. If nothing else, for now, I'd like at least three bottoms and three tops that I can mix up so that I'm not wearing the exact same outfit twice in one week. I can worry about getting a decent variety of clothes later, once money's not so tight.

10. Explore DC more. Now that I'm going to be working in the city every day, I have no excuse not to spend more time in the city than I have this past year. I'm pretty familiar with some parts of the city by now (Adams Morgan, Chinatown, Dupont, Penn Quarter, anything in the general vicinity of the Mall), but there are tons of neighborhoods that I've never even visited.

11. Travel more. I'm not talking about packing up and going to Europe for a month or anything like that, but I really want to do more day trips or weekend trips up to Boston, Philadelphia, New York, etc. Bus or train tickets are pretty cheap, and I'm sure that I could find people in most of those cities who wouldn't mind me crashing on their sofa or floor for a night.

12. Post new fanfiction at least once a week. It doesn't matter if it's nothing more than a short ficlet. The big reason I haven't been writing basically anything the past six months is because the Restaurant of FAIL was draining all of my time and energy. I really want to get back into the habit of just writing for fun; it always makes me happier and less stressed when I have time to do it.

13. Attend at least one con other than Vividcon and Small Press Expo. I haven't missed VVC since 2006, and SPX is basically across the street from my apartment. Those two are a given. I really want to make it to at least one other con this year, though. Maybe con.txt? It's only a couple of miles away from here...

14. Try to leave more feedback. I'm horrible at bookmarking a story and planning on coming back to comment on it later, and I keep swearing that the next year I'll be better at it.

15. No more tattoos this year. I need to get some of my debts paid off before I get any more work done. Though I might get my ears pierced again (or possibly repierced, if I decide to try the cartilage again - third time's the charm, right?); that's not nearly as expensive.

16. Win the lottery. What? A girl can dream, can't she?
