He came home with no food on the table again. Not even any serving for him. He was hungry, couldn’t spend any of his savings because he knew there were far more important things than eating. School’s tuition was just another week and Kyuhyun had to pay dues. Working part-time did only so little while juggling academics. He had hoped coming back to the apartment for food but even his father left with nothing but a note Fend for yourself. Got myself a good time tonight. Don’t expect me home for a few days.
This was the fourth time this month, right after his mother left them for another man. His father, negligent and uncaring now, decided to do what he wanted and dropped responsibilities. Including parenthood.
“That man…” Kyuhyun whispered, crumpling the paper and tossing it away. As if doing so would send his anger to his missing dad. Which he likely knew was no use.
It was already dark when he went out, when he decided to spend his money for something decent inside his stomach. Kyuhyun took a quick route to the nearest convenience store; ordering take out and eating at an empty bench just a few more walk away. He didn’t want eating inside his place. He felt sickened staying there even more.
He was done, finally full and ready to go back and probably start with his homework when his foot stepped on an uneven surface. A thick notebook with leather covering under his foot; black and made simple. Kyuhyun looked at it incredulously.
“I know I just dropped it here somewhere.” A voice reached Kyuhyun and when he turned around, came face to face with a man. “Ah! There it is!”
The man bowed over and over again; overly polite for Kyuhyun’s taste but he dismissed it, handing over the item and the man smiled so widely that Kyuhyun felt his cheeks ached for the stranger.
“I don’t know what I’d do if I lose this. This is very important to me.” The stranger explained with an off accent, clearly not Korean, but understandable nonetheless. Kyuhyun, in return, wore a poker face. “I’m Zhou Mi, by the way.” The stranger said.
“Hmm.” Kyuhyun replied, not feeling the need to share. And he watched this Zhou Mi bowing at him again, seemingly in a hurry to leave, to not even hear any response - not that Kyuhyun was giving anything at all - and it was good that he was too. Kyuhyun wanted to get home. Wanted to be alone.
But then it was no more than five steps to exit the place when Zhou Mi came bounding back, catching his breath like he ran as fast as he could to reach to Kyuhyun. He looked rumpled, a flash of determination in his eyes that spoke mysteries to Kyuhyun.
Zhou Mi smiled at him next, all face lit up and said, “Hey, can we be friends?”
--
“Finally. I thought you’re never gonna come back. It was just a notebook, Zhou Mi. What’s so important with that notebook? I thought we were starting the project?”
“We are, master. I just.. I can’t lose this. This is all my... Well, anyway, there was this man who was kind enough to return it to-“
“There’s another person? Like right now? And I thought there was no one here around. Quick, get him. Befriend him. ANYTHING. You know what to do, alright?” The mentor suddenly pushing Zhou Mi towards the direction he came from. “C’mon, we’re gonna lose him and this is a perfect time to start the plan. I’m not going to be present but I’ll be watching from afar, monitoring. Do what it needs to be done. Go now! Hurry!”
Zhou Mi took off, clutching the notebook tightly and disappearing, leaving a smirking elder into the shadows.
And he watched, clearly amused, at the sight of Zhou Mi doing hand gestures and the man he met wearing a reluctant expression. But then the man sighed, nodding and began walking away with a smiley Zhou Mi next to him.
The victim was chosen, the plan had finally commenced.
--
Kyuhyun didn’t want bringing home Zhou Mi who was still a stranger. Although he did need to get back because it was getting late but his companion seem to not mind, especially when Zhou Mi looked so eager at the shopping street they went to.
“I didn’t know they have stores like these.” Zhou Mi literally plastered himself on a glass window, eyes glazed over displayed clothes.
“You sure are tourist-y.” Kyuhyun said.
But Zhou Mi smiled a restrained smile, gaze still away from him. “Yeah, tourist. Something like that.”
They spent hours out, looking and letting Zhou Mi spazz the next couple of shops. And Kyuhyun started to doubt if Zhou Mi actually ever stepped out from his place and see Seoul. “Are you sure you’re a tourist? This area is one of the most popular, visited by a lot of foreigners. And you’ve never been here?”
“My work doesn’t let me do stuff.” Zhou Mi brushed off; his hand on a pretty silver necklace on a booth.
“Work? I thought you were a student. You don’t seem that much older than me.” Kyuhyun mused. “What do you do then?”
He watched Zhou Mi fumbled with the display, only to bump a stack of boxes next to him. All containers square and circular falling and rolling away and Zhou Mi dissolved into apologetic words and bowing, crouching down and trying to restack them again.
“No, it’s okay.” The seller assured him, smiling pleasantly and Kyuhyun watched Zhou Mi growing even smaller. Did asking his job have some kind of No-Entry disclaimer? If that was the case, Kyuhyun immediately dropped it. Maybe it was too personal to ask.
And Zhou Mi looked suddenly tensed; his amused eyes turned grim in contrast with his easy and happy air previously. Kyuhyun watched him looked back, as if Zhou Mi was watching something behind them. Wary. Alert.
--
He resigned finally, leading themselves to his steps. Kyuhyun couldn’t afford staying out too much and Zhou Mi seemed so interested seeing his crib. This was no problem since he was alone for tonight, he remembered.
Then a beeping alert had him pausing to stuff his keys inside the lock. He looked at Zhou Mi looked at his cellphone.
“I… got to go.” Zhou Mi said and there was a hint of annoyance too. Flipping back his mobile closed and putting his hands inside his jacket’s pockets, grunting.
“Duty calls huh?” Kyuhyun asked, opening his door. “I’ll see you when I see you then.” He was about to enter when Zhou Mi caught his arm.
“Thanks for tonight. I really, really had fun.” There was that delight he saw again, something Kyuhyun couldn’t doubt, not when Zhou Mi was looking at him like he just brought a kid from an amusement park. They didn’t do so much except walk and talk and see really. “Can I see you tomorrow again?”
“Uh, sure?”
Kyuhyun didn’t know why the response was not reconsidered. But Zhou Mi, smiling softly at him, made him not think about it anymore.
--
Zhou Mi, let’s go. Time’s up. And your patrons are looking for you already. Management told. You didn’t think you can pass your angel duties, did you? C’mon, leave. I’ll wait for you at the corner of the street.
The message taunted him, making him frown and wanting to obliterate it immediately, to ignore it altogether. But Zhou Mi knew it wouldn’t help. And acting inappropriately would have them suspecting. Especially his Principality. He didn’t want that. He simply placed his mobile back and started walking away.
He cringed at the thought of going back to the House, meeting his customers and doing it again. But if it meant finishing the remainder of the night and then afterwards would be a new day and new time with Kyuhyun, he was ready to get through with it.
His customer was rougher than the one he had the last time: clawing his arms, squishing him, messy mouth that spoke of inexperience and wanting to get off the quickest way possible. But Zhou Mi let him do what he wanted, as long as he didn’t exceed to an hour. He had about two more people to meet.
“C’mon.” His client quivered above him, almost at his peak but not enough to actually release, not when Zhou Mi wasn’t touching back with equal eagerness; His hot breath ghosting over Zhou Mi’s face. “Are you this distracted? Do you want me to complain? This isn’t customer satisfactory, you know? I paid for you. Do your fucking job and move.”
He almost faltered at that, but eased a serious, work face, manhandling his customer to have his back pressed against the mattress and slamming right in, right to the hilt. “Distracted? Of course not, sir.” Zhou Mi licked a long line along the column of neck and grabbing where it wanted to be grabbed. “Let me get better to blow your mind away.”
And he did, twice as good as he actually anticipated and had the man thrashing and yelling profanities and urges next that he was sure echoing along the halls of angels. He got off the bed, almost too immediately and leaving the man to get his bearing back and clean himself. Zhou Mi wasn’t paid to be affectionate and play good lover.
Zhou Mi was on his way to his next room, next client. In haste, he fixed himself presentable, took a quick drink at the pantry and sauntered over his direction, sporting a smirk. This zealous behavior was not ignored or not acknowledged.
--
“Excellent performance, Mi.” It was the greeting his mentor gave him when the two met at the hallway, jobs done. “Both here and the project. Your clients were too satisfied that they needed to be hauled out of the room. They kept demanding you back, did you know?”
He gave a nod, not exactly happy and victorious. Regardless of positive appraisal, he still didn’t want what he was doing. He felt sick and dirty and all sorts of awful still. He’d have about a two-hour shower before hitting the hay.
“So tomorrow, you continue meeting with that man during daylight. And at night, this. Understand? I can only predict that this is going great than what I expect.” There was a pat on his back, his mentor smug and confident. He was led to the front of his room, left with a chuckle and distant footsteps. He didn’t want Zhou Mi to stay with him at his room, was the message Zhou Mi understood.
All Zhou Mi could be anticipating about was that he’d be going out, and meeting Kyuhyun again.
Kyuhyun and his simple replies, simple interests that shrouded a lot of question Zhou Mi wanted to ask and to know. That and the smile not on the lips but the little spark in the eyes were so interesting to look at.
His thoughts of the project, the whole seducing clients to the House for money, for power, for being an Arch member, effortlessly slipped out of his mind. The notebook that sat on the table next to his bed now held more meaning than it ever had.
