October 3 2011 Ichimen - Neutrino

This week is the Nobel Week, when each of the Nobel Prize winners will be announced.
Accordingly, this week's Ichimen will report on "a certain discovery", wherein a time machine which can go back to the past may be possible.

Dr. Einstein, a former Nobel Prize winner in Physics.
Speaking of his model research, we think of  "The Theory of Relativity".
"The Theory of Relativity" states that "nothing with mass is faster than light".

However on the 23rd of last month, the researchers from Nagoya University in Japan who joined in the international research team announced that "there is something higher than light".

That something is an extremely small particle in space called Neutrino.
These particles are formed from the explosion of stars, and even the sun emits them.
It can't be seen by eye but a large quantity of it exists here on earth.

The research team launched this neutrino from a research institute in Switzerland to the underground research institute in Italy 730km away and measured its speed.
The result was that the neutrino "exceeds 6/100,000,000 seconds (60 nanoseconds)" faster than the speed of light.
This is a contradiction to Einstein's theory that "nothing is faster than light".
The world of science was in an uproar.

In the first place, what is "The Theory of Relativity"?

First of all, the speed of light is around 300,000 km in a second.
This is considered to be the speed limit.

For example, let's say there is a vehicle that can fly close to the speed of light.
According to the Theory of Relativity, within this vehicle, time runs slowly.
Hence, although it is only a short time for the people riding, more time has passed on earth,  so when they come back (to earth), they will be coming back to the future.

The explanation up until now is the Theory of Relativity.

However, because of the announced neutorino, if there was a vehicle even faster than the speed of light, then the speed limit will be surpassed.

Hence, there are also researchers who believe that "one can go back in time, in other words, a time machine which goes back to the past is possible" based on the theory (of relativity).

However, there are also skeptical views on the experiment results this time.
There are also those who pointed out that "was the watch used in the experiment accurate?"

The research team who conducted the experiments spoke in the following manner:

Nagoya University Associate Professor Nakamura Mitsuhiro
"Since what I'm announcing is a result supassing general knowledge, I extremely feel mental opposed towards it."
Nagoya University Associate Professor Komatsu Masahiro (?)
"On the contrary, not publishing undeniable, definite results just because it does not fit with one's own general knowledge is an improper attitude as a researcher."

As the research team "cannot simply come up with a conclusion", the researchers are changed and the results are once again verified.
That's all for the ichimen.

I'm not really much of a science person (or rather science didn't like me much lololol) so I had to research a bit for this ichimen. Here are some references I looked at to understand the Theory of Relativity if you got a bit lost especially on the time travelling back part:

I think this is really interesting! :) What do you guys think? Will be be able to build a time machine based on these results? XD
