Winner was an affable bloke and actors liked working for him- not least because he indulged them. He won Brando over (not an easy task) by telling him, "You're a great actor and I'm a second-rate director so please do whatever you want."
Ha ha. I had a feeling it was something like that after looking over his filmography and seeing how many great actors were in his films. Even his last film, Parting Shots, had Oliver Reed, Bob Hoskins, Diana Rigg, Ben Kingsley, Joanna Lumley, and John Cleese. I love the description on Wikipedia, "Upon release in the UK, the film gained controversy over its plot, and was widely criticised in the national press. It has since been evaluated as one of the worst films ever made." I love the way those sentences are constructed, one expects the second sentence to end, "been evaluated as artistically important" or something. But nope. Everyone was right the first time.
