[character abilities]: Like all HiME [Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment], Akira can create solid objects from photons, summoning both an Element and a Child at will. Her Element is a double-bladed kunai/ceremonial knife, while her Child is a giant bio-mechanical toad named Gennai. Gennai is able to project a bright light, allowing Akira to pin the enemy down by their shodow. Following that, Gennai can launch a larged spiked ball (which is actually it's tongue) from it's mouth, which can prove serious or fatal if the enemy isn't able to dodge in some way. When needing to escape, Gennai can create a cloud of smoke, as is traditional of ninja escaping from battle.
She is very knowledgeable in martial arts and ninjutsu, especially for her age, able to use various shinobi abilities that makes her very useful for covert operations.
[character personality]: Since Akira has been raised as a boy, she has many masculine traits, which is the perfect counter for Takumi's gentle and effeminate nature. Despite being a girl, acting and dressing like a boy is second nature to her, and was able to fool everyone in the series except for Nagi. She was even the most popular 'boy' in her grade due to her athletic abilities and gruff but polite nature. She is very good at expressing her opinion without coming off as too brash. Because of needing to protect her identity, Akira has trouble getting close to people, since she doesn't want to kill anyone if she doesn't have to.
She has proven herself exceptionally kind in many instances, despite being raised as an introverted ninja. If there is someone who needs her, she is quick to try to help them, all the while trying to gruffly act like it's no big deal. Still, if it was someone she hardly knew that had discovered her gender, it's debated that she would have killed them. Akira is kind, but she is also fiercely loyal to her family and her teachings.
Her interaction with Takumi reveals personality traits you don't see with others. She is incredibly protective of him and does almost everything with him. She even has a sketch book filled with her sketches of him whenever he isn't looking. When left alone to her thoughts, we see that she occasionally wonders what it would be like if she had never been a HiME, and could have lived as a normal girl. In this fantasy, we see that despite having a very masculine personality, Akira is a girl at heart, and a dreamer. But more than that, she is loyal to Takumi, and would sacrifice everything just to keep him safe.
How much she relied on and cared for him was shown when her Child was destroyed, as she collapsed and was shown to have hardly moved or eaten for days after that. This seems to be a constant pattern with the HiME, as whenever their special person dies, they lose a part of themselves and no longer have the will to fight.
[character history / background]: In her thirteen years, Akira's led a complicated life, in that she has been forced to hide her gender for it's entirety. Her family is an old shinobi clan in Japan, and very aware of the HiME as well as the Festival that forces the HiME to combat each other, and in turn lose their most important person. In order to protect her from this fate, her father told her that she had to live in disguise as a boy, and kill anybody who found out about her true gender. Akira wasn't aware of just why she should never reveal being a HiME, but she followed her family's orders to the best of her abilities, only using her HiME powers in secret whenever an Orphan attacked. She also kept a close eye on the other HiME at Fuuka Academy using her ninjutsu to sneak around.
Things got even more complicated when another HiME showed up at the Academy--Tokiha Mai and her younger brother Takumi. Akira was assigned to be Takumi's roommate and ended up becoming very close friends with him. With Takumi's weak heart and gentle personality, it is inevitable that Akira eventually fell in love with him. Still, she knew she had to keep her identity a secret from him. In Episode 10, even when Takumi saw Akira defeat an Orphan in her ninja outfit, and despite it obviously being Akira, she asked him to keep the 'Secret Ninja of the School' a secret. It's during this episode that we found out that Akira was a girl and a HiME.
Eventually Takumi walked in on Akira when she was changing and discovered her gender. When he tried to run in embarrassment, she tackled him and told him that she would have to kill him for finding out her secret. She was stunned when he smiled and told her to go ahead, stating that she had already saved his life several times over, and that he was tired of fighting to live anyway. Touched and very upset, Akira tried to make him take his medicine for his heart, crying and telling him that she hated him for giving up on life so easily.
After that, they became much closer, and she even tried to help him in his personal life with his sister. It was when Akira was telling Takumi that he was her special person that Mai and Mikoto overhead, realizing that Akira was one of the 12 HiME. Later on, Takumi was attacked in his hospital room by Nao, who wanted to get revenge on Mai for losing her eye. Akira broke in just in time to rescue Takumi, summoning Gennai to escape, but Nao used her powers to track them down again.
When Akira told Takumi about the true power of HiME, and that their special person would die if their Child was defeated in battle, Takumi smiled and told her that he didn't mind being bound to her. The two shared a very emotional moment before Nao attacked them again. Knowing she had to fight to protect Takumi, Akira used Gennai to battle Nao's Child.
Unfortunately Mikoto and Mai happened upon the scene, and while Mai was trying to help out Takumi, Mikoto thought that Gennai was a threat to Mai. Thinking she was protecting Mai, Mikoto destroyed Akira's Child. Akira yelled when she realized what happened, collapsing from the shock while Takumi slowly died in Mai's arms.
Enraged, Mai tried to destroy Mikoto to avenge Takumi, and in doing so nearly burnt down the forest by the Academy. It was in this aftermath that Akira was seen being carried off in a stretcher by her family members. Falling almost catatonic at losing Takumi as well as her HiME powers, Akira was tied to a wooden post and left alone.
