SA of the Year!
Tonight was the MOB’s end of year banquet where they recap the year and presents awards and stuff. Quick background info, the MOB is Rice’s Marching Owl Band, but we don’t actually march. We're a scatter band, and we have weird sections like strings and electronics and even a cello. One of the sections is called the SAs, the Show Assistants. I am an SA. We build props and act in the skits that the MOB writes for each of the football games.
So, for one of the shows, I turned one of the SAs into a horse. I designed and built him a horse costume, and he looked like a real horse. There were so many other things that I did too. For my quirky gift I received a little toy hose with the title “OMG, IT’S A PROP!” (Each section’s leaders gets everybody a little thing that has some relevance to that person). But that’s not the best part.
I was granted the SA of the Year award! *dances happily*
It is given to the SA who has worked very hard throughout the semester and has done wonderful things. The SAs found the oldest, most beat up paint brush which lived at the bottom of the paint brush can, spray painted it gold, put a tag saying “SA of the Year” on it, and gave it to me. It is a great award and I absolutely love it. After the awards banquet the SAs went back to the Closet where I wrote my name on a piece of duct tape and put it on the cardboard SA of the Year plaque stapled to the wall.
But that’s not all. This year we had seven home games in a row, seven games in which the SAs only had a week to design and built the props for the next show. Chuck, our director, was amazed by this. Therefore the SAs were awarded the Outstanding Section of the Year award. As one SA put it, it was like a Broadway show being recognized for the props.
As if that wasn’t enough, there was a new award this year, the Freshman Cup For Outstanding College Enthusiasm. This is given to the residential college who has the most freshmen in the MOB. Baker (my college) won the award! This year all but one of the new SAs were from Baker and there were other Bakerites in the other sections.
Tonight was a wonderful night.
