DW Fic: Small Things

Getting another little ficlet out of my head. I hadn't planned to write an 11th Doctor fic so early because we haven't met him yet, but he fit into an idea I'd had some time ago, so I finally wrote it out, using the Confidential interview with Matt Smith (though still winding up with a lot of David Tennant's voice I fear). Anyway, similar idea to

Ah, London in 1973. I was there. I was one of the glitterati of the time. I was having a blast. London was sheer paradise in 1973. Trust me on this.

Thanks! I tried to do some research because while I know some about the US in the 70's, I wasn't sure if England going through the same cultural revolutions. I couldn't find much on a first search except politics and sports, but would love to know more about real life at that time. And more about your time as one of the glitterati. :)

~thinks~ Might be worth looking on the web for pages by or about Pamela des Barres, who was one of the queens of the groupie scene and who married my then-friend-and-colleague Michael des Barres, gorgeous singer, hereditary aristocrat and leader of Silverhead, one of the best bands of the glam rock era (who, unfortunately, never quite got to the deserved pinnacle of success despite international touring, recording and a fanatical following). IIRC Pam has written at least one book about the scene (and general culture of Rocking London**) back then. Try googling on those names and follow the dancing links, I'd say :-)

London burst into life in the '60s and 1973 was in many ways the last great year of its full-on flowering. Everything was still shiny and new, joyous not-yet-jaded music was everywhere, Carnaby Street and Chelsea (Kings Road) still ruled the funky fashion world, and you could still buy a round for six people and get change from a fiver...

lol Aw, I know if you actually one day did write out a life story, it'd likely take several volumes of text. Just always interested to clear up more of the mystery created by only knowing each other online and over the last few years. I'd never, of course, be pushy for more info than you'd willingly give.

I'll look into all of those people and sites. It sounds like an interesting time to be alive.

~grins~ Well, there's a distinct possibility that more could be discussed eventually over at ~cough cough~ Jenny's place, where the company is a bit more select and discreet :D

It was indeed an interesting time. Sure, all times are interesting to live in and through, but the late Sixties and early Seventies were, erm, interestinger than most, since that was an era redolent of the personal freedom and cultural-and-philosophical progressiveness that tends to come with economic boom times. People were so full of hope. Full of sociopolitical anger, too, but it was a hopeful sort of anger - a let's-fix-this anger, rather than the oh-no-not-more-shite-again anger of our current day. Those times will come again, but not for a while...possibly in your later lifetime, though surely not in mine :-)

Speaking of living through interesting times, I highly, highly recommend a fascinating film about just that, called The Man from Earth. It's not available on DVD, but the makers have actually come out and said they don't mind it being passed around

Ah, nice to know I've got a long stretch of "not more shite" times ahead before things pick up again. :) Oh well, whatever comes, I'll just continue to roll with it. Like you said, all times are interesting and there's fun to be had no matter what the situation.

I did have a bit of a sad feeling yesterday to hear that Borders bookstore and Pier 1 import store may be going out of business soon since those are two stores I've gone to a lot with my family and were somewhat constants in life. It'll be strange to see what survives the recession and what doesn't. Probably for the best I moved out of my old home town so everything's different for me now anyway.

Yay for season 2 of Sanctuary! And I'll definitely look up 'The Man From Earth'. Sounds promising.
