I'm hoping that "do we put so much emphasis on death in our culture?" was rhetorical. I'm responding to it anyway. There is an emphasis on death because, well, face it, the majority of our culture is religious and death has a major role in all religions. It's the end of a life. What is wrong with celebrating that? You celebrate then end of highschool and college? Why do we emphasize that in our school years? Because it is the end of a significant time. Atheist, or not, death is a significant thing. If you are in fact Atheist and believe we're just breaking back down into basic elements, and fertilizer, then even that is significant becasue our dead bodies become breeding ground for life-- and what isn't to be celebrated there?
Back to my point, to sum it up: The key to successful society and existence is compromise. That means, in this situation, having the decency to hold your tongue and let those who did hold this man high up mourn their loss--not your loss, their loss--and waiting for the storm to calm and then making your "Reagan-was-shit" point.
On a side note, I caught a very good portion of a show at 12 last night on GPBTV about how bad of a president Reagan actually was.
