Biblical Scribblings

Jul 15, 2007 01:37

There is a part of me that is deeply amused at the fact that my current writing project has me engaged in what amounts to Biblical exegesis. So much of this book is going to involve redactions of Genesis and introducing lay-readers to the Documentary Hypothesis ( Read more... )

After submitting for that effort I continually became paranoid about my name being associated with it. Essentially "Dear god, I'm really putting it out there, and just SAYING it."
I'm sure you're well aquainted with that little panic territory.

But re-reading the edits and whatnot I liked the tone, it feels good, it looks tight. If the edits I saw were any indication it is a very good project, and one that has been long overdue.

Nothing worth achieving ever comes without risk.

Of course, realizing that has still never quite cured me of that initial moment of vertigo right before I hop off the edge. :)

You guys present some research materials that I would have given my eyeteeth for five or ten years ago. The alternate view is something that is really worth saying, and both articles add something valuable and new to the field. I'm very happy to have gotten your participation.

Thank, again.

BTW, I am loving that cover.

Do you know when contributors copies are being sent out?

The Nephilim book sounds pretty cool, too. Looking forward to that.

I'm guessing next month or so. Please let me know if they forget to send you an extra one for the library of the folks who so graciously allowed the extensive quotations. I've got one of my copies earmarked for you -- just in case.

College graduate of a satellite school of the Reformed Church of America (super conservatives, but thankfully not ultra-conservatives), I'm also the daughter of a Presbyterian pastor. Labels one might use for me include Chaos Magician, Pagan, Buddhist, and Christian. I nealy minored in religion in undergrad, studying the Christian reformations of the middle ages, the history of Islam, and the old testament (specificaly the Pentateuch).

I'm very happy for all the Biblical scholarship I have been privy to. Or perhaps this comment is just to gloat that I actually know what the Documentary Hypothesis is. :-P

Well, our little friends J, E, and P become important for establishing a date regarding the fragment of a story in the Penateuch. The main work where the story is elaborated is usually placed around the period of a Maccabees, circa 2nd century CE at best. I'm trying to show that the story itself is older, and is laced throughout a number of other works. I'm having a blast.

Sounds delightfully more in depth than what we covered in a couple days of classwork. I look forward to hearing more about it.

Is is the story I'm thinking about, Genesis 6:4?

Not really very quick. That one took about two years, from concept to completion -- though a lot of that was because it involved a number of different contributors, and wrangling all of them together, getting different works edited and approved, and getting all of the permissions in order took a great deal more time and effort than I'd anticipated.
