Title: Letting Go of the Past
Fandom: Inuyasha
Warnings: OOCness on Sesshoumaru's part. Just a tad.
Disclaimer: I don't own Sesshoumaru, though I wish to God I did! That honor goes to Rumiko Takahachi. And I don't make money off this either. This was written with the intention of entertaining people. However, I do own Keiko as she is my OFC. Use her without my permission,in part or in whole, and I'm going to be very angry.
Enjoy!
It was a bright sunny afternoon and Sesshoumaru was spending a miserable day in modern day Japan. He was at some place called a "golf course" with an insipid little twit of a woman who couldn't shut up. He tried not to sigh out loud and roll his eyes. An annoying habit he picked up in the last 100 years.
He looked down at his gold Rolex with its Japanese quartz dial and diamond chip accents. He sighed heavily and wondered when this "date" would be over and he could leave her with as much dignity as possible.
"Is everything OK Sessho," asked the bubbly young woman beside him. She was positioned in something called the address.
He gritted his teeth at the pet name she gave him. He couldn't stand her but she was the closest looking woman to his Rin in over four centuries. He was going to break up with her. The sex was dull and uninspired and boring as hell. He wasn't her first lover, nor would he be her last. But he just couldn't take it anymore, the pet names, the twirling of his hair in public around her fingers, the way she hung on his arm like a lamprey. He was just chalking this relationship up to the fact he was missing Rin.
"No, everything is fine Keiko," he said coolly as she set up her backswing and hit the ball several hundred yards onto the green.
"Nice," he said casually as he inserted his tee into the ground. Straightening up he heard her giggle and gritted his teeth some more. He really couldn't stand her and couldn't wait to break things off with her. He just hoped he could keep calm enough to play the course out.
"Seshsso, where will we go for lunch," she asked as he set up his backswing using a neutral stance. He had to be careful when hitting the ball. When he first began learning this useless game he had obliterated more than one ball in the process by using too much strength when snapping his wrists while striking the ball. Learning temperance wasn't easy for him since he's been all about power all his life.
He inhaled as he twisted back and after a brief pause took his downswing. He watched as the ball sailed through the air and land in a lateral water hazard. He pressed his lips together in frustration, no, not going to make it to the end of the game.
He turned to her with a little anger glowing in his golden eyes and watched as she lost her smile and took a step back from him. He had never shown her his anger, but he was showing her a small portion of it now.
"Sessh -," she was cut off before she could finish the shortened name she gave him.
"Do not call me that," he said angrily. Frustrated, he turned his back to her and scanned the area looking at nothing in particular while running a hand through his much shorter locks. He heard her sniffle and shuffle her feet as she walked over to their golf bags. He sighed. Great, now she's crying. He made her fucking cry. Women never played fair. Granted it wasn't her fault she wasn't really Rin, but damn it all to hell! Did she have to cry?
He flinched when she touch the small of his back. Sesshoumaru mentally groaned as he heard her take a sharp sniff. Damn it!
Turning back around he caught her around the shoulders in a gentle grip and drew her close to him. He gave her a gentle hug before setting her away from him so he could see her. She was that much shorter than he was.
"I'm sorry Keiko, I shouldn't have snapped like that," he said softly as he wiped some tears away with his thumb. "I've never liked being called that, not even by my younger brother. I should have mentioned it to you when we started dating."
She nodded as she gave him puppy dog eyes drenched in a fresh cascade of tears. Apparently she knew where this talk was leading and was hoping to stave it off. But he wasn't going to be deterred. They just weren't suited to each other. His expectations had been too high when he met her.
"Look Keiko, we aren't suited to each other. I need a more conservative girlfriend," he said in a slight rush. He couldn't believe he was nervous. Him! He who has lived for almost a millennium and yet here he is, as nervous as a pup in his first serious battle. However, there was a good reason to be so nervous.
He was about to break up with the first woman who has ever come to look the closest like his Rin. He looked over her delicate features one last time. She looked so much like a younger Rin it was uncanny and just a little upsetting at times. He just had to remember that she wasn't, but it wasn't that easy as he skimmed her features as if memorizing them.

"Sesshoumaru-sama," said a weakened and old Rin as she held out a hand to her lord. She smiled as he took it and scooted closer to hear what she had to say without straining herself further.
"Yes, child," he said in that cool detached way of his. He was really breaking inside. The child that had found him wounded after the battle for his brother's sword, followed him after he revived her from the wolves that attacked and killed her, was dying in front of his eyes. He grasped her hand a little tighter as if that could keep her from leaving.
But he was Lord of the Western Lands. He couldn't, shouldn't have feelings for an old and dying female human. But he did. And it was eating him up inside that he wasted all the time. He should have made her his so long ago before her mortal body took her from him. And now it was too late. It was too late.
"Don't forget me. You promised me you wouldn't," she whispered as the breath left her body and her eyes gently shut for the last and final time.

"Conservative," she parroted incredulously.
The sound of her voice brought Sesshoumaru out of his thoughts of the past. He dropped his hands from her face and backed away from her, wisely putting some space between them.
"Yes, conservative," he said icily as he pointedly looked her up and down. She was dressed rather inappropriately for a golf course in a short skirt, almost a mini. Her shoes were fine because they had to wear the special shoes regardless, but her top was well, skimpy, among other things. It was a baby doll tee with an additional four inches of the shirt cut off showing a good portion of her stomach and belly button.
He had tried ignoring the media and their endless speculation in what he saw in her, but over time he realized his mistake. She just wasn't for him. He was more reserved than she, and more often than not they clashed over where to go for the evening and how the other should dress. Not to mention the make up sex wasn't all that great.
Sesshoumaru watched her face turn a dull red in embarrassment.
"I thought you liked the way I dressed," she gritted out between her teeth.
"I thought I did, but I don't," he said a bit defensively. He was not going to be defensive in his decision to break up with her. “I'm sorry if I lead you on by not telling the truth, but I can't stay silent any longer. You’re nearly 30 years old."
"What the hell does that have to do with anything," she cried in a near screech, sending some hidden doves off in startled flight. One of them is hit by a golf ball and killed instantly, its lifeless body plunging back to earth causing a small throng of people to race over.
The couple ignored the fuss going on behind them and continued with their spontaneous argument.
"It has to do with the fact that you dress like a teenager rebelling against her parents instead of a mature woman," Sesshoumaru said scathingly. "In other words, dress like a grown up."
Keiko sucked in a sharp breath, her eyes going wide with disbelief, this from a guy whose hair was below his ass when they met. She was the one who convinced him to cut it shorter. In an effort not to cry she gritted her teeth while baring them.
Sesshoumaru instantly recognized his mistake. He had just called a grown woman a child, and an immature one at that. If there was one thing that he detested, it was people who acted immature. Besides, if the shoe fits then why not? He realized he was not acting like himself in this argument, but she tended to bring out a side of him he hated. It was the "modernized" version of who he was at heart. He longed for the days of the Warring States Era where he could take his frustrations out on basically anything if he were so inclined.
He took a deep breath and held it for about thirty seconds. This was not going the way he had hoped. This was another aspect of modern society that he loathed, breaking up with a woman. They either got mad and tried to exact their own form of revenge ( IE they try doing something really stupid that ultimately backfired on them) or they break down into hysterics and he wound up gritting his teeth for another three months before enjoying a mutual break up.
"Look, that's - " he started saying before Keiko cut him off with a rude noise. He narrowed his eyes at her before continuing. "Look, we obviously grate on each other’s nerves. Let’s just break up before it gets messy."
"Or I do something 'immature', she said sarcastically before tugging on the hem of her shirt a bit self-consciously.
"Whatever," he sighed and ran a hand through his shortened locks. "I'm sorry if I hurt you, but I think it’s for the best."
"Yeah, you’re right," she said as she wiped the tears from her face.
Sesshoumaru gave her a surprise peck on the lips and turned and left.
He couldn't recapture the past, he realizes that now. So now he must now try and move a head into the future. He just hoped that he will be able to finally let go of one little girl who captured his cold heart and warmed it with her presence. It was going to be hard, but he was Sesshoumaru; Lord of the Western Lands. And he will over come this.
