Keele is a duel honurs university so I'm studying English and History there. It's a great community feel; we call it the Keele Bubble because everyone knows each other and everyone gets on really well. That's important for me; I'm from near Brighton in Sussex originally so it's not like I can go home a lot (thank god), so feeling a sense of community and belonging is good.

The English course is pretty good. It depends on what you like. They offer frequent modules in Year One and Two studying Romanticism and Renaiisance literature. Last year, as well as the introductory module which is a combination of poetry, plays and prose, I took Late Twentieth Century Novels and read books like London Fields (Amis), Brick Lane (Ali), Shame (Rushdie) and Poor Things (Gray). At the moment I'm studying Novels Into Film, which is interesting but the novels and films chosen are really boring! :| In second and third year you have the option of doing Creative Writing and in third year there's a Gay Literature module which looks really interesting. You can do a duel honours in English and something, but you can also be an EAL and studying English and American literature!

Hope that helps! :)

Hmm...I'm trying to steer clear of the literature side of things and concetrate on creative writing - I spend so much of my time writing, I have very little time to do that amount of reading. Although I know I'd enjoy it if I forced myself to; I used to be a voracious reader, and it kind of saddens me that that part of me died a bit.

I wouldn't mind doing that coupled with American Studies - I'm reading over the spec for that as we speak, and it looks really interesting. America has fascinated me for years, and I'd love to learn more. Plus I'd like to move to America at some point. Despite that being one shit-ass scary prospect!

Wow, I've rambled on way too long. I'll check out Keele on the UCAS site, but at the moment it's looking pretty good!

I thought that, except that I found that having to read a novel a week even if it was horribly boring wasn't that fun! :p But yeah, Keele isn't as language based with the English courses, so maybe it's not for you.

I'm wishing I'd been an EAL instead of struggling through History! Like you I'd like to move to America at some (scary) point! Keele does Study Abroad which gives students the option of study for half a year in America, Canada, Australia, Turkey etc, I wish I'd gone in for that!

Whatever your decision, university is the best thing ever! Have fun searching!
