I want to inject myself full of ink!

I'm thinking about getting a tattoo for my 22nd birthday. I'm hoping this'll be handy for my friends and present-buying, because I really don't want anything other than a tattoo, so instead of buying me something I probably won't use, they can just donate towards the cost of the tat. I've wanted one for a while, but I've only recently come up with ( Read more... )

As somebody with several tattoos, I would say to think before you put anything on your wrist. I know it's a popular and pretty place, but do you really want this to be the first thing people notice about you when you give them a hand? I know it probably doesn't matter for friends and such, but if you want to work anywhere it will matter. (Even for me, my most visible tatoo is my lower leg, and because of it I have to wear tights in summer while other employees can have bare legs. Not a big deal obviously, but what if they make you cover yours with tape or sleeves? Every single day? Would you be okay with that?)

Also, make sure that you go to a good artist. It is a simple design, but still there are many crappy artists out there who could fuck it up! Look for someone with a big portfolio and nice clean lines.

I'm not trying to be discouraging, I think tattoos are the best things ever! But you are stuck with them forever, so it's always best to think about it a lot before you go through with it. What I do is draw the tatoo I want on the spot I want it, and live with it for a while.

Good luck!

Forgive my lurking other comments, but as someone who is also thinking of getting a couple of tattoos done, I really like the idea you put about drawing the tattoo on for a bit. Might try that, actually.

And if it's hard to do yourself ask a friend! There are sharpies that work really well on skin, and if you redo it every couple of days you can 'testdrive' the tatoo however long you want to before going through with it :)

That might be necessary for one of them XD But it's definitely something to think about.

You have swayed me into putting the tattoo on my shoulder. :) To be honest I'm starting to prefer it, and it'll be easier to hide (though I plan on being mostly self-employed, eventually!).

We've got two tattoo parlours in Bangor (not bad for a tiny town!) and they're both very good. my friend Kayleigh had one done at one of them and it came out really well - I'll have to get the name of the artist that did it, though, if she can remember.

I do intend to think about this a lot, don't worry. And the drawing-it-on-for-a-while thing sounds like a good idea!

Thanks for the advice, hun xxxxx

I always have this little speech whenever a friends wants a tattoo, simply because I've seen so many go and get one 'where it's cheapest' and then they come back with something crappy they regret. That's why I gave it to you too *laughs* But it sounds like you're well prepared. Are you thinking black or more shaded grey?

Anyway, it's totally exciting to get a tatoo, you'll love it! You'll have to post pictures once it's done!
