My own meme!

Jul 05, 2010 20:02

I do enough memes, it must be my turn to make one up! There probably already is one similar to this - if not identical - but what the hell.

- List any number of people (or groups of people) that you consider heroic in any way.
- State who they are/where you know them from.
- Explain why they are your hero(es).
- Add pictures, links, videos, Twitter sites etc. to spread the word!

1. Matt Stone & Trey Parker
Creators, writers, producers, directors and voices of South Park and Team America

Okay, not only is this pair one of the funniest writing teams working in the media today, they are totally unaffected by their fame, fortune and Hollywood living - yes, they're assholes, but they've been assholes since their Colorado days, don't blame Hollywood for that! And actually, they're not very big assholes; they are two of the most tolerant, open-minded, equal-opportunity people I've ever heard of.
But the real reason they have been elevated in my mind from 'awesome' to 'heroes', is their rigid belief in free speech. At least four full episodes of South Park have been devoted to it (Cartoon Wars I & II, 200 and 201), and I have no doubt in my mind that they'll return to it again. Even after recieving death threats they were adamant in showing the image of Muhammad. And they're right - if we don't stand up to terrorists now, when will we??
Oh, also, Matt Stone is one smokin' hot Jew. (Matt is slightly more of a hero to me than Trey is, because although they are equally talented, Matt just doesn't realise he is!).

2. Stephen King
Author

Not much explanation for this one. He is just one of the most brilliant storytellers in history, and his work has been a huge influence on me. I'm currently reading Cell which, 40 pages in, is already utterly enthralling. My favourite book of his is still The Running Man, which was one of the first I tried. Spellbinding. And he's from a place called Bangor! Even though it's the one in Maine, it still makes me feel pretty special!

3. Camille & Kennerly (a.k.a. The Harp Twins)
Harpists/Martial Arts teachers/many other things

My most recent heroes (as in, I only found out they existed last night), but it didn't take me at all long to fall in love with them. Besides their long list of academic achievements, their variety of talents, their beautiful music and their devotion to each other, they are two of the nicest, funniest, sweetest people ever. I highly recommend checking out their ASL music videos (where they sign various songs; I've included the video of 'My Life Would Suck Without You' below) and their amazing harp duets on YouTube.
Side note: they are officially the most identical twins in America!

4. The cast of 'How's Your News?'
Creators of How's Your News?

How's Your News? is a comedy/interview show that was created, produced and presented by a small group of disabled people. At its best, they basically piss off celebrities and then sit back and watch as the celebrities try not to get mad at them. It is a genius concept that has allowed them to utilise their disabilities so the audience is laughing with them, not at them.
My favourite of them all is Sean Costello - he has such an attitude! And I've never seen it in better use than when he interviewed "Bird Lady": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5pBtyF3mNs
It can sometimes be an extremely uncomfortable show to watch, but that's the point!

5. Allie Brosh
Writer for Hyperbole and a Half and TheGloss

A very, very, VERY funny writer who should be a bazillionaire by now. I actually adopted her writing style (sort of) for one of my creative writing pieces which got submitted at uni. If you like The Oatmeal, I guarantee you'll like her blog!

Even though she hasn't done any for a while, I recommend going through her archives and finding some of her open letters - the one to her uterus was the best one!
She also writes for TheGloss. Here, she generally makes up a product, or series of products, and tries to sell them as if they are totally useful - even though they're not.

That was really hard to do without a return key...
None of this tagging nonsense - if you want to take it, just take it. x
