Not Feeling The Love

Nov 05, 2014 16:13

Before I begin with the main topic of this post, I figured I should give out a progress report, of sorts. I've been working on packing my stuff up, and we're going to head up to Chicago, next Friday. We're going to split the trip into two days. Thankfully, my brother is coming with us, to help with the move. I feel bad about splitting up the newlyweds, but on the other hand, I feel so much more better with him helping out.

I've also got a long list of businesses to apply at. I plan to, finally, start applying online, over the next few days. I just wanted to wait it out, until we were closer to our moving date. However, I do want to give myself one or two weeks, just to get settled. This is, by far, the most drastic move we've had to make. Plus, it's right before the holidays. So, if anything, I want a little time to get things straightened out.

But anyway, putting that aside, I need to rant about anime!

After five eps of Build Fighters Try, I have to say that I'm not really feeling the love. I feel like the show is lacking in passion. Sure, Sekai's hot-blooded, but it feels kinda...I don't know, phoned in? Like, I enjoy Tatsuya's passion, but Sekai's passion feels so shallow. (And this is coming from someone, who loved G-Gundam.)

I'd want to say that his martial arts tactics are getting old, but I think that's probably secondary to the main issue I have with him, right now. Sekai's not really a team player. Build Burning is a good melee unit, I will admit that. However, his preference for soloing is going to cost Team Try Fighters a win, eventually. (Unless we go by the shounen rule that the main character can never lose.) You can't really call them a team, unless all three of them work together. So far, their teamwork's been pretty lousy, and Sekai's a major part of that.

However, Sekai's probably the least of my issues with Try, so far. It's his sister that's probably gotten under my skin, the most. By the second episode, Mirai's been put on this super-high pedestal, by both the characters in the show and the fandom. I, however, can't see the appeal of her character, at all. The show presents her as this sickeningly perfect person, but she's done next to nothing at all. All she's done, is either stand around and look pretty, or stalking Sekai and Fumina. At least Rinko was funny about shipping Sei with China! Seriously, if Mirai's supposed to be Rinko's stand-in, then she's failing on every level.

Fumina and Yuuma haven't really done anything to annoy me, thankfully. I know Yuuma's not very well liked, but I'm okay with him. He does have a huge stick up his ass, but he's also right about the little things he points out. I've found myself agreeing with him, more often then not. In a way, he kinda reminds me of Tieria, except he's piloting the sniper Gundam. So, even if he is a bit on his high horse, I can let it slide, this time.

Fumina, however, I've grown to like. I thought she was bland, at first, but I think I came to really like her, today. I'm not even mad about her switching out her Cardigan for an SD Gundam. If last season was anything to go by, I'm going to give Winning Gundam a fair chance. How many people originally wrote off Beargguy, only to come around, in its debut ep? So, I'm not going to diss the Winning Gundam, until it gives me a reason to.

As for the other characters, Minato and Gyanko are probably the most stand-out for me, so far. Putting Gyanko's crush on Sekai aside, she seems to be a fun character. Glad that she's going to stick around, for a while. While I know the entire fandom hates Minato, I actually like him, since he probably has the strongest personality, for the time being. Much like Yuuma, he's an asshole, but some of the points he's made are valid. He even, unintentionally, got Sekai to overcome some of his flaws, just by pointing them out. Besides, if there's a possibility of 19-year old Mao showing up, then this kid's a keeper!

Moving on, there's been another trend, I've noticed. Now, I know that everyone got paired up by the end of the first season, but there's way too much shipper shit going on. I've been watching this with xx_adverb_xx, and we both feel like Try's been more like a middle school harem series, with Gundam thrown in. It's been detracting from our enjoyment of the show. That, however, is partially my fault, because I don't like getting shipper drama mixed in with my giant robots. (Especially love triangles.) If the romance is done well, then I wouldn't complain so much. Unfortunately, I've seen so much badly done forced romance, over the years, that it just ruins things, for me.

For that matter, I haven't been feeling any excitement from the Gunpla Battles, either. There hasn't really been a fight, that's gotten me fired up, yet. Yeah, I know we just started the qualifiers, but come on! Tatsuya managed to get me going, just by his little bit in ep 2, of the first season, alone. Maybe I'm just getting old, or something, but when I'm not getting "that feeling" from watching robots beating the crap out of each other, then something's wrong.

At this point, I'm just sticking around for a few reasons. First, I'm hoping to see the Gunpla Battles get better, over time. Second, I want to see Team Try Fighters become more of a unified team. Third, I've always been a fan of Ral's, and I want to keep watching his antics. (I really hope Masashi Hirose recovers, from whatever illness he has. ;_;) And fourth, I need more Team Meijin in my life! Once again, Tatsuya's cameo, today, was my favorite part of the episode. So, I'm really anticipating seeing him, that girl, Allan, and that unnamed guy (who may or may not be Julian) in action.

So, I'm not planning on dropping it. After all, I managed to finish out Code Geass R2, even when I felt like dropping that. I had invested way too much into that show, beforehand, and I decided to ride it out to the end. So, much like R2, I plan to stick with this to the end, as well. I just hope it improves, over time, is all. If not, well, at least I have Team Meijin to look forward to.
