"My coffee has gone cold," the third year complained to her friend, "and I can't do a decent Warming Charm yet. I'm going back inside."

"I'll come with you," her friend said as they got up and made their way back to the castle.

"There, that's them gone. Now we have some privacy." Scorpius put away his wand with a grin.

"So now what do we do?" Albus asked Scorpius and Lily in a hushed tone as they sat under a tree by the lake.

"Talk to Rose," Scorpius suggested.

"No way! She'll kill me for telling you," Lily argued.

"Lil, I hardly think she's got any right to get mad, since she's the one that told you," Albus retorted.

"But that's different. She made me promise not to tell anyone. She said that Uncle Ron sounded worried about Mum's reaction if she ever found out."

"So you tell her that we've as much right to know about it as you do," Scorpius said, not unkindly. "And we'll reassure her that we are certainly not about to tell your mother, or anyone else for that matter."

"But what about James?" Lily fretted. "I know he's mad, but do you think he'd tell Mum?"

"If you'd asked me that a few days ago, I'd have said no, but ..."

"What exactly did he say?" asked Scorpius. "And why would he be so angry about something that happened before your parents ever got together?"

"Well, that's just it, isn't it? They weren't together before our parents were."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean our parents were together when our dad was in sixth year."

"And our mum was in love with our dad long before that," Lily added.

"Yeah, so ..." Albus's voice trailed off.

"Wait a minute!" Scorpius blurted out. "You're not suggesting they had an affair, are you?"

"No, not really. Our parents split up before the war started, and didn't get back together for a while afterwards. It must have been during that time that your dad and our dad ... well ... you know."

Scorpius seemed to mull this new information over in his head before responding. "So do you think that your dad had an affair with your mum and that's what split our dads up?"

"No!" Lily gasped.

"Actually, I hadn't thought of that, but it might explain why James would be so angry," Al said.

"Especially if your mum got pregnant."

"Oh my God!" Lily interjected. "You don't think our parents had to get married, do you?"

"No, no. I don't know anything," Scorpius was quick to add. "I'm just thinking out loud. Still, it's possible ..."

"I think you're right," Albus said definitively.

"That's horrible!" Lily admonished him.

"No, Lil, not that Dad had an affair and got Mum pregnant."

"Then what are you talking about?" asked a confused Scorpius.

"I think that's what James thinks. That he wasn't wanted, but was ... an accident."

"But you sounded like you had your own idea. What were you thinking?"

"I just thought that maybe our dads really wanted to be together, but broke up because two men can't have children. And I know our dad wanted kids."

"And why would James be mad about that?"

"He's really protective of Mum. I think he might think of that as a betrayal, especially if she doesn't know anything about it. He might even figure Dad never loved her."

"But you don't feel that way?" he asked Al.

"No way," insisted Lily. "Our parents definitely love each other."

"I agree with Lily. Our dad loves our mum. I just don't know if he always did."

"Or maybe we've all got it wrong, and our dads just got off with each other. You know, experimenting. Then they realized it wasn't for the long term, and they both went on with their lives."

Lily pulled a disapproving face. "You think?"

"Who knows?" Al shrugged.

"Our dads," Scorpius answered.

"We need a plan," Lily suggested.

"Definitely," Al agreed.

"And James?" Scorpius asked.

"We hope he doesn't say anything until we have a chance to talk to our dads."

"But we talk to Rose first," Scorpius insisted. "I want to know first-hand everything she heard."

Al and a reluctant Lily agreed. Now they just had to get Rose Weasley alone.
