"Can you keep a secret?" Lily asked her brother.
"'Course I can," Al said indignantly. "I'm not the one who always --"
"This one's huge," Lily interrupted.
"Well, it's not really that big, is it? I mean, we're not going to get into trouble for not telling anyone, are we?" Al didn't plan on any more detentions this week. He and Scorpius had already had two.
"No, it's nothing like that, it's just ..." Lily scanned the room, then grabbed her brother by the arm and dragged him out through the portrait hole, down the hall and into a storage cupboard. "We can talk here," she said. Waving her wand, she muttered Lumos.
Al looked at his sister incredulously. "This is a bloody cupboard, Lily! What are you playing at?"
"Shh, someone will hear us. I didn't want anyone else to hear what I have to say."
"Fine then. Spit it out and get it over with so we can get back to the common room," he commanded.
"Did you know that Dad and Mr Malfoy ..." Her voice trailed off and she stared at something behind Al, not looking him in the eye.
He chuckled, relieved that this was all it was. "That they were enemies? Of course I knew. I thought everyone did. That doesn't change the fact that Scorpius and I are friends, though."
"No, that's not what I mean, Al. They weren't just enemies."
"I know. They had some major fights, they hated each other, and Mr Malfoy did some stuff that Dad never wanted to talk about. He stopped Mum from telling me one time. Then Mum stopped Dad from telling me something terrible he had done to Mr Malfoy. It was a weird conversation, but don't worry, Lily. It won't affect my friendship with Scorpius. He knows all this too."
"Al, they were together. Dad and Mr Malfoy were together."
"Of course they were together. They were in the same year at school, and they fought in the same war."
"No, Al. They were together, like Mum and Dad are together now."
Al stared at his sister. After almost a minute of silence, he finally asked, "What?"
"Yeah. Apparently it was after the war."
"That's crap, and you know it!" Al barked at his sister. "Who told you that?"
"Our cousin Rose. She heard Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione one night after they found out you and Scorpius were friends. Uncle Ron said something about it not being a good idea at all, and that it could only lead to trouble. They apparently said a lot of stuff, but one thing was clear. Uncle Ron never wants Mum to find out about it. Never."
As Al tore open the door, Lily called, "Where are you going?"
"To find out if my best friend knows anything about this."
"And then what?"
"I guess we'll have to figure it out together, won't we?"
Lily watched her brother head towards the Slytherin dungeons, a feeling of trepidation falling over her. Merlin, I hope he doesn't do anything stupid!
