Six Things I've Done Recently

Jun 16, 2011 13:52

I've been living this super-boring life that usually consists of doing something in the morning, eating lunch and watching TV for several hours, finding something else to do, then dinner, then chores. It's kind of become a matter of "what can I do to take up more time?" which is really quite shameful.

So I try to keep track of what I'm thinking, but I'm too bored, or nothing is happening, and I honestly feel like my entire life is a train wreck right now (I mean, kind of a good train wreck, more below, but still, LOTS going on), and what I wrote is barely worth saving.

1. I did go out to Over-the-Rhine for the first-ever City Flea. It was pretty cool; there were tons of people and some local artists (I'd heard of most of them) and vintage shops. I bought a blueberry lemon thyme popsicle, pomegranate iced tea, a vegan buckeye cookie, mojito lip balm, tea tree oil soap, lavender scrub for Caroline, and an OK Go poster.

I love the girls at Sweet Peace Bakery; they are so friendly and nice. When I bought the buckeye cookie, they said to let them know what I thought since it was a new addition. So I unwrapped it right there and took a bite--and it was really perfect, not too moist and not too crunchy, kind of like a brownie with peanut butter in the middle. They were glad to hear it.

I hiked a few times around the City Flea before deciding on the poster. I went through several racks of vintage stuff, considering, and then stopped at Powerhouse. I've heard of them before (go Newport!) and just started idly going through their racks...then I saw the OK Go poster and I was done. It was $20 supporting a local screenprinter, and my favorite band! How could I go wrong? Also, they gave me stickers.

I also love Orange Fuzz; their products are so soft and smell amazing. The mojito lip balm is 100% awesome.

2. Over-the-Rhine. I've been spending a lot of time out there in the past year and I can't deny that I'm starting to love it. After the City Flea, I checked out the new Park + Vine and was very impressed by their new grocery section and cafe area. There's just a wonderful blossoming community out there in OTR; people are so friendly (when I was working out there last weekend, a store owner wandered over to introduce himself and say hello), the stores are cute, the food is great, and maybe cute guys on the street smile at me when I walk by. :-) That is just a bonus, though.

3. ROLLER DERBY. As soon as I saw Whip It, awesome movie of badassery, I was interested in roller derby. When I learned, a few months ago, that Cincinnati has a roller derby team, I could have died of joy. Their opening game was the day after my birthday, but I couldn't afford to go. Now, tickets are cheaper and I wanted to reward myself for recent new opportunities.

I went with Amy, who has never seen roller derby or Whip It. We were impressed by the chick with the mohawk. We bought souvenirs--I only got buttons. We got alcohol. They didn't have my brands and I wasn't sure if they'd offer margaritas or something, so I ended up getting a tiny bottle of wine. (Well, it ended up being two.)

Roller derby was awesome. We had a hard time figuring out scoring because it seemed like Chicago was scoring in the tens with every round whereas Cincinnati was scoring by fours. The Chicago girls were definitely talented and unashamed about using their butts to their advantage. (I mean, DAMN.) They had excellent defense. Cincinnati girls were fast, especially jammers Wheezy and K. Lethal (in the JV team, I liked Hot Slice), but they had trouble getting past the Chicago defense, so usually the Chicago jammers ended up rocketing past them pretty quickly. It was not a great game for Cincinnati (they lost by nearly a hundred points in the second bout!), but it was really cool to watch.

I feel like I can get into roller derby. I was a little drunk from the wine and I got really into the game, screaming for Cincinnati to defend their jammer from Chicago's nasty blockers, and the arena wasn't packed and the girls seemed cool and nice. And some of them had really cool names. (My personal favorite Cincinnati name was Sk8tr-Keanney, but Chicago had some fine ones like T. S. Helliot and Jackie Daniels. Derby names are fun.) Kick-ass, man. I want to be that badass.

Later, I watched Whip It again and figured out scoring, or at least have a better idea of scoring. The lead jammer can only score after becoming the lead jammer, and in that case, the number of points she gets depends on how many people in the pack she passes. I think the reason Chicago kept scoring insanely well and Cincinnati was dragging was because Chicago put up such a great defense and the Cincinnati jammers had a hard time getting past them, lead or no.

The next (and last!) home game is Saturday, and they play Detroit. I am curious about how this bout will go (I bet Detroit girls are just as tough, if not tougher, than Chicago girls) but I'm not sure yet if I'm going to be able to go.

4. I went for over a month with only one job, and not a full-time job at that (when people ask, I say I'm "semi-employed"). Now, suddenly, I have the potential for four. I've just started working at Cincy Haus (you can read a little bit about it here; it was the first hit on Google) on weekends and I LOVE IT. If you've been reading this blog for a while, you probably know that I am a massive supporter of American Legacy Tours and I'm totally psyched to be involved. Anyway. I also do house-cleaning, while job searching.

I also just signed with a temp agency, which I'm really excited about. My hiring manager is very positive and friendly and I'm so excited to be working for them.

And Caroline and I are doing a show this year, which is also, technically, a job.

I love all of these things and want to keep doing them; the problem is that they have all started colliding this week with more potential collisions next week. I'm only in town for three days next week and then it's off for a fifteen-hour drive to Disney World. I want everything! (...well, CH is on weekends, so it really doesn't interfere with anything.)

...I almost wrote "still, beggars can't be choosers," before remembering that I have sworn myself off that phrase forever. (I think I said it a lot, to myself, in 2008 and 2009, maybe as an excuse for where I was in life and where I was working, and eventually said to myself, "Stop saying this! You should not be a beggar and settle for whatever happens to come your way! You should be a chooser and be happy with what you choose! Well, I want to choose everything, is the problem.)

5. We leave for Disney World in less than a week!

6. Oh, and I wanted to start painting my apartment before leaving for Disney World, and I've been doing VBS this week, and my apartment is trashed because I moved furniture for said painting, and I want to clean my apartment relatively thoroughly (dishes, fridge, sinks, floors, tidy up) so that I can come home to a clean apartment. Yay?

...people write (maybe it's just teenagers I'm friends with on Facebook) about summers being so relaxing, the time to chill out and do nothing, but summers have never been restful for me. They are always super-busy!

This was my favorite thing about VBS yesterday (context: a woman from my church dresses up like Mary and the kids talk to her):

CHILD: Mary, what's that for?
MARY: Uh, I'll have to tell you that story another time.
ME: Wait, what was she asking about?
MARY: My smiley face tattoo.
