Ebooks-tree and Fanfic Theft

Apr 14, 2015 11:27

Ebooks-tree is a bot site skimming fanfic sites and copying stories, then making them available for download. They seem to be copying largely from AO3, UrBookLibrary, and Wattpad. The site has ads so they're probably making money off visits to the site, if not the actual PDFs of work themselves.

You can check to see if your work has been taken by going to the site and doing a search under your username. If your work is there, the search results will include PDFs titled with your fanfic's name and your username/psued. (You'll get a result with a floppy disc icon and the link name 'Download - 'username'.pdf [Full Version]' no matter what. Ignore this, it doesn't have the content you want.) If you try to download anything, you get taken to another site, which wants you to register, and also wants a credit card.

You can send Ebooks-tree a DMCA take-down notice for your work here. If you're not sure how to word it, a template has been provided by fyeahcopyright, along with more information in their post, which I recommend reading. Their template is below as well:

Your Name and/or Pseudonym as an e-signature (or the name of the person you’ve authorized to submit this request, with a slash before it and after it):
Link(s) to the unauthorized works (link to the pdf, the mobi and the page hosting all of it):
Link(s) to an authorized version of your work (whether on AO3, tumblr, LJ or somewhere else):
An email address of the submitter (include it again even if it’s in the header):
This statement: I have good faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
This statement: The information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that the complaining party is authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

AO3 has already made some changes to the site to make it more difficult for bots to access and download work. Their response can be read here. You may want to make your fics accessible to registered users only. If you're trying to access something and can't, this is probably what the author has done.

You don't need to edit each fic individually. Follow these steps to edit multiple fics, or all of them, at once: Go to Works > Edit Works > All >: Scroll down to Edit > Scroll to last box and check 'only show to registered users' > Update all Works.

Edit: evening_bat had a few of their fics stolen, sent in the take-down request last night, and had the PDFs removed today. A few people on Tumblr have gotten theirs taken down as well. So the requests are being honored, at least on this site, for now.

what is this fuckery?, fic, fanfic, oh shit, the hell?
