By modern standards the film, dating from 1920, isn't overtly horrifying (when you stop and think about what's happening, it's a different story) but it is still a marvelous example of early German Expressionism. It's also an early example of a prequel for the 1915 movie The Golem, which is considered lost. The story is based on the 19th century legend of the golem of Prague.
