The Golem: How He Came Into the World
In 16th century Prague a rabbi creates a golem to serve as protector for the city's Jewish population.
By modern standards the film, dating from 1920, isn't overtly horrifying (when you stop and think about what's happening, it's a different story) but it is still a marvelous example of early German Expressionism. It's also an early example of a prequel for the 1915 movie The Golem, which is considered lost. The story is based on the 19th century legend of the golem of Prague. You can watch it online, free,
