The proper phrasing of a request for help is "Excuse me, please, could you help me with/to find X?" It is not "HEL-OOOOOO!!!" Neither is this the proper response to give to someone answering their telephone. I got a phone call today that went like this:
Me: If I need to explain this...
WNW: Wrong Number Woman
Phone: *ring ring* I'm only ringing now because it's inconvenient
Me: *picks up phone* Hello?
Phone: *silence, which I don't find unusual because this happens with my bank and the phone company, they use a dialing computer and there's a pause before it's routed to an operator*
WNW: HEL-OOOOOO!!
Me: Hi....
WNW: Fred.
Me: Pardon?
WNW: Is...Fred...there...?
Me: No, you have the wrong number.
WNW: Fiiine...*slam*
Me: Bitch.
I mean, really. You called me. Even if you were expecting a business to pick up, and thusly answer "Good afternoon, Bob's Discount House of Taste, how may we help you?" and got "Hello" instead, isn't the proper response to that "Er, is this...?" I mean, c'mon, I'm not psychic here. If I were, would I have picked up the phone?
Sometimes I just let the machine screen the calls, since it's never for me unless SoundEffect is calling from work. This is why.
stupid people,
wrong numbers
