Quick catch-up

Here's the quick catch-up version of my week.

1 - I have been on the most outlandish interviews (well, for me they're outlandish). The following is only a sample. There was the second round interview where my interviewer insulted my profession and then asked why I wanted to be in Support with a resume like mine; to which I candidly replied, "I don't." Then there was the company that purposely hires overqualified temps because they do the best contract work, and -- while this firm doesn't pay much -- does give its temps the freedom to come and go on interviews.

2 - I have read a zillion YA novels while waiting around or whatnot. The one that stands out most is probably Son of the Mob (by Gordon Korman) because it wants to be Son of Interflux (which I love, ironically by Gordon Korman) meets Dead Man on Campus (which I also love); it misses the mark on both, but is still quite fun and short. Also fun and short is Dragon's Bait (by VanVelde) with its moral message about revenge buried under a Miller-esque witch trial combined with a virgin sacrifice who makes friends/allies with the virgin-eating dragon. Tanith Lee's Piratica was only okay and was possibly saved by being all about AU female pirates. The true disappointment was Evil Genius (by Catherine Jenks) which I couldn't even make it through; it kind of wanted to be the story of AU young Rodney McKay (SG: Atlantis), but failed so spectacularly that the best part was the "courselist" created by a graphic designer to make up the inside cover.

3 - Yay! Hair! I got my hair cut and styled today. I love my hairstylist, and I say this every time I go in. Today, she styled it by pinning a majority of my hair up so that it looked like I had a chin-length bob as opposed to shoulder-length layers. A nice visual trick, but I'm not sure I can repeat the illusion in all of its glory on my own. Amusingly, she initially thought this would be doable with a single bobby-pin, but then she had to go off for a moment to find a box of pins. (Count now on my desk: 16)
