Photo Editing Software?

I'd really like to start a photo journal but I'm having a hard time getting to some good free photo editing software for Mac. I've been trying to download GIMP all day but the website seems to be down and its really frustrating. I think I like the idea of forcing myself to make at least one photo entry a week. A. it would get my writing back up to speed and B. It would get me back into photography as well. I was going to start with an entry on Halloween but I need to downsize the photo and I don't know how to do that in iPhoto (or even if its possible).
If anyone knows of any good (and free) photo editing software for Mac, where the website I can download it from actually works, I'd appreciate the input!
Back to killing myself with P90X...why did my friend give me this again???
