Let's try not to talk about work in this entry. As usual, I've been glued to my seat each day trying to conquer deadlines while pulling out daggers behind my back but its getting to be too mundane and extremely uninteresting. So I should mention about lighter things such as ....
... My alcoholic night out with darling
psynical_waltz at AlleyBar / No. 5. I was horrified that AlleyBar has such a young crowd! Or was it me who have aged? HMMM. Much prefer the cosier ambience at No. 5 but was marred by this misbehaving group of caucasians who had too much to drink. Excuse me, being a drunk expat doesn't give you the right to molest extremely reluctant waitresses trying to do their job!
... "The Devil Wears Prada" movie, which I caught with
e_rambler &
leaflord. My thanks to them, for dragging me out of office for a short respite. I read the book a couple of months back but its always interesting to see it moved to the big screen. The clothes worn by Anne Hathaway were gorgeous but I was more taken with Meryl Streep's acting. Her soft, mocking voice delivered swigs that was so much more effective than a straightforward punch. And yah, I can so identify with the work environment. Its very, very tough to find people outside my industry to understand the requirements of my job. I had to decline wedding invites, birthday celebrations, housewarming functions because I had to work on weekends and public holidays. Long hours are a norm but people just don't understand why knocking off at 6 or 7 is a rarity for me. Grr.
(Oh wait, not supposed to talk about work.)
... Rendezvous with my excolleagues at the Sun with Moon restaurant/cafe at Wheelock Place. Loved it! The place was nicely done up with soft lights and thoughtful zen-like furnishings. Service was immaculate; staff was ever ready to attend to us with a smile and our tea was replenished frequently without any frantic waving from us. We were also instant fans of the delicately prepared menu. My teriyaki cod fish was fresh and well accompanied by the savoury teriyaki sauce. I like the tofu cheesecake! Haven't had cheesecake for a couple of months and this dish takes the cake (pun intended). Every bite of the cheesecake yielded a soft creamy texture without the overly rich taste and was well balanced by the crumbly biscuit base. Of course, the creative presentation of the dish in an intricate bird cage helped it score extra points as wel.
... Trash, the Dramabox play which I caught at the Esplanade tonight. How was it? Well, it wasn't a standing-overation worthly performance but it was not as bad as its name. It had the same political satire message in some of the previous Dramabox productions but was more subtle and buried. Attempts at humour were far and few; in fact, I was more amused by the mock "harsh and hoovering" treatments by the 2 cast members on the "Trash" and "Elite" audience (we were made to choose to be seated in either one section) before the play commenced. Dialogue also seemed to be way too long for certain parts and I just felt that it was much harder to connect to the play. Still, I applaud Dramabox for putting up such productions. It is hard for the arts group to survive in Singapore, let alone a Chinese group. We do need arts in our life, if not just to take a breather from our hectice lives and reflect on the world around us.
And the weekend ends in 10 mins. Grrrr.
