When Adam opened the door to find Carlos standing quietly on the porch, he didn’t comment; just stood back to allow him entry.
They sat in the small tidy living room on Adam’s worn-out old couch, amongst the souvenirs and mementos of the older man’s travels, the silver time-piece on the mantel counting out the minutes passed in silence.
Eventually, Adam got up to make them a drink and Carlos joined him in the kitchen, picking up two mugs from the draining board and dropping a tea bag into each before placing them on the work surface next to the kettle. Waiting for the water to boil, Adam’s eyes sought out his; and it was because he saw no questions there, only acceptance, that Carlos allowed himself to be held until the uncertainty had passed.
