new car?

So, I got word back on my truck. They think the computer may be going. Anywhere from $400-$800 to fix if that's the case. I'll have to take it to a dealership to get that fixed though if necessary. Apparently it sent back a bunch of errors and they don't know why blah, blah, blah. For now, it's drivable, but I don't know for how long. Combine that with the fact that I need to get a new water pump soon as well (which is close to $1000) I might have to give up on the truck and look at a replacement.

Frankly I'd rather keep the truck and once I fix water pump and the computer if need be, then there's not really anything left to replace on it since I did a bunch of work last year. So I"m not sure what the best move is.

On one hand, I don't think I can afford a brand new car. However a used car makes me nervous because you just never know.

I'm hesitant to get something new because i'll be protective of it and every nick and scratch that SF drivers will bless me with will be extremely upsetting for me. All the marks on my truck not made by me still upset when I see them. My truck was pristine before I moved here. I'm only responsible for one of the marks on it. With a used one I'll be paranoid something will break down right away.

Then there is the question of car or truck? I like my truck 'cause I can haul things when I need too (which isn't nearly as often as it used to be but still handy) and I'm up high and can see the road better. I dont' like that I can only take one passenger and if I go shopping I don't have anyway to "hide" the packages. A smaller car would make for easier parking, more than one passenger and the truck would be good storage.

Input anyone?
