Today was kinda shocking. I didn't really appreciate the full scale of it until lunchtime when I passed an electric shop and saw Tony Blair on a television interview. Loads of people were gathered round. I saw the pictures and heard the witness accounts. I nearly cried. I offer my deep sympathy to anyone who has been adversely affected by this crisis, or knows someone who has.
Thankfully today was not a day that my sweetheart had to go to London. Nor did either of my uncles, although both of them could have done. As far as I know, everyone I know in London is safe and well.
I am so impressed with the emergency services and the hospitals for the way they coped with this tragedy. They kept a bad situation under control and minimised the panic. The hospitals treated hundreds of casualties at extremely short notice. At least one even opened up an emergency department when they don't usually have an A&E at all!
It was fantastic the way the Internet sprang into action and suddenly there were people all over the world offering to make contact with relatives on others' behalf. My huge admiration goes to all those who took the initiative to create instant online communities and put together those lists of people who were known to be safe. We needed that today.
I was shocked, that's for sure. I found it hard to concentrate for much of the afternoon, but by hometime I realised the panic was pretty much over. I wasn't scared to take the train home - it was coming from London Waterloo but I sensed that today was probably the safest day to travel on the trains, since everybody was alert and on the lookout for anything suspicious. There were police at every station - waiting to interview commuters coming home from a day in London. The ticket inspector abandoned usual ticket inspecting duties, preferring to look for abandoned luggage and to answer travellers' questions.
Heheh - Big Brother's just come on and I've just realised - they'll know nothing about it until they come out! It always seems to happen that something major happens during Big Brother that will seem almost unbelievable when they are eventually told about it!
Anyway. Well done England. It was a horrible day but I can't help thinking we handled it pretty well. Thanks so much to everyone who did anything to assist the spread of information - it was invaluable today.
