Alright, this is a long story, so grab a drink and a snack and kick back for a bit.
Mr. Hartlove was my teacher last year, in MD. Many of you who had class with me last year will know where this is going by now, but I just found out today and I'm just stunned. He was awesome, a great teacher - a very challenging teacher, who made you think and answer questions on your feet, and the drop of a hat. His questions were hard, his tests impossible, and the knowledge he gave us broad and detailed. I learned a lot in his class, and enjoyed it.
He also had this habit of being late, and whenever he was late, he'd bring us donuts the next day. The donut habbit died out (while the lateness didn't, but we just laughed it off). He'd cater study sessions (professional italian bistros, lasagna, complete with endless soda and a candy bar each, it was great). He drove an awesome car...he was rich, he told us, off an inheritance.
He also writes amazing letters of recommendation. So when the time came, I asked him to write me one.
This year, I've been waiting for both he and my french teacher's letters, taking longer because of the complications in getting them from MD, through guidance, to here. I brought it up this morning that I had to get the letters, something like that, and alex went "Oh, you havent heard?"
...No, I had no idea!
Mr. Hartlove was arrested for drug possession and possible distribution (!), possessing such drugs as marijuana and GHB...the date rape drug (!!).
That's like a really bad punch line in a really bad joke.
I'm just...shocked. I really...He was so free with his money...all the catered sessions...he gave his student aide all the money from his wallet as a grad present. He fed us all the time. It's amazing and just impossible to think of him as a drug dealer. But there's the perk of American Justice: Innocent until proven guilty. And i refuse to think him guilty until i find hard evidence against my notion.
I hope...if he's proven innocent...that people wont lose repect for him, that they'll continue to appreciate him as a human and a marvelous teacher. this must be a massive shock to the school.
