 “I can do this.”

Janet Frasier starred at her reflection in the mirror. Red eyes and pale cheeks starred back at her. Who was she kidding…she sighed deeply as a second reflection appeared behind her in the reflecting surface.

“Janet.”

She could feel Sam moving closer even if she could barely hear her friend’s combat boots against the floor. Then a hand pressed over her shoulder and Janet turned around.

“I can’t do this.”

“Yes you can.”

Sam was smiling but Janet could see past the smile. The way the blonde avoided looking into her eyes told her she was just as unsure as she was.

“Part of me feels like I can do this but another part, a very loud part, keeps telling me that its Cassie on that operation table. She’s my daughter Sam. I may not have given birth to her but she’s mine, she’s all I’ve got.”

“You can do this. Go save her.”

“What if I can’t?” Janet shot back more angry than she had intended. “Everyone looks to me for that brilliant plan that will save Cassie. What if this plan is not enough? I don’t exactly know what to do. I’m not like you guys who can do anything and save anyone. I’m not a super woman like you.”

“I didn’t mean…”

“I know you didn’t.” A sigh escaped Janet’s lips. She hadn’t meant to sound so harsh. She loved Sam, she was her best friend, it was just that that sometimes she felt so inferior. Sam could do anything; she was off fighting aliens while Janet was left to take care of whatever pieces of them that came back. It wasn’t that she didn’t love her job, she did, but sometimes she wished she was as sure of her abilities as Sam. “I just feel so helpless.” She moved to one of the benches and sat down. Her hands clasped and unclasped in her lap and she watched them intensely.

“You do have a plan.”

Sam sat down next to her and she closed her hands over Janet’s to keep them still. She moved her thumb over the soft skin of the doctor’s hands.

“It’s a long shot.”

“Awesome. Long shots are my specialty.”

Janet laughed.

“I’m serious. You’re not alone in this. Cassie is just as special to me as she is to you. Let me help you.”

Janet looked down at their hands and then dared herself to look into Sam’s eyes. Her heart sunk a little at the sight of pain the blonde tried her best to hide but there was also something different. Something she didn’t quite know what to name but she had seen it many times before. It was the look Sam had before she did something crazy, something so far out no one believed she could pull it off, but Sam always did. The look in Sam’s eyes told Janet that her friend would stop at nothing to save Cassie. And that gave her hope. Janet pulled away and stood up; she found herself smiling as she held her hand out to Sam.

“Let’s go save our daughter.”
