Who: Eddie and Madsen
What: Comiserating, drinking, fun times.
Where: Madsen's house!
When: Post MMS, Pre-Alex

"Dude, don't knock this song."

"There's no knocking here." Eddie replied simply around his beer as he listened to the stereo blasting through the house. "I've got nothing but respect for the man, with all his musical accomplishments."

"But?" Madsen leaned back in his chair as he drank his beer, waiting for the other shoe to drop. He didn't care what Eddie thought, at least he wasn't living with his mother. And despite all Eddie's rationalizations on the matter, it wasn't cool.

"But, someone like you being attracted to said music, is going to raise a question or too. I'm sorry buddy, that's just the way it goes."

"Dude, there is totally nothing wrong with me listening to Elton John!"

Raising his hands in a mock surrender, Eddie shrugged at him. "Did I say there was anything wrong with it? I'm just saying," He went back to drinking. "Questions, pal. Questions."

Madsen grumbled. "Fine. Dude. I'll change it." He got up and stalked to the stereo with childish defeat in every step, and flipped the song from 'Benny and the Jets', then started to walk away.

And the beginning of 'Moving Out' by Billy Joel sounded, and Madsen promptly turned around and hit the next button again. Franz Ferdinand. Safe.

He turned back and walked to the table, sitting down and returning himself to his beer. At the look on Eddie's face, Madsen pointed at him. "Dude, shut up. Don't think I forget about you listening to Madonna that one time."

"Hey hey hey." Eddie straightened up on the spot, and pointed back at him. "That was my mother's music, and it was there because I was driving her to a doctor's appointment, thank you. I'll have none of this knocking of her music just because it was in my car."

Grinning, Madsen was triumphant. "Dude, it was so yours."

"Was not."

"Was too."

"I won't play these childish games with you man, seriously." Eddie rolled his eyes and sat back again, relaxing. "Honestly. So childish." He drank, returning back to his calm self.

Madsen shook his head and set down the beer can, deciding on taking the route of better conversation. "So, dude, what's the deal lately? You didn't tell me what you've been up to."

"Y'know, the usual." Eddie finished his beer and tossed the can. "Two points, two points..." He willed it to make it to the barrell... and it missed. "Damn."

"Dude. You suck."

"Shut up."

Madsen laughed, and then went and grabbed the can, tossing it in the trash with his own, and grabbed them two more beers from his fridge. "John still with that chick you told me about?" He brought it back over, setting one down in front of his friend, and opening his own as he sat back down again.

"Sadly yes." Eddie sighed as he popped open the beer. "Despite my best efforts. He says he loves her, yadda yadda, I don't know." He waved his other hand dismissively, an 'I just don't understand the insanity' gesture, before drinking calmly.

Understanding this completely, Madsen just shook his head sympathetically, and listened to the music go through Franz Ferdinand, and become Led Zepplin. Kashmir. Not bad, no need to change it.

Eddie looked over at him curiously, remembering Madsen's own tribulations over his best friend's girl. "What about Sam and that... That girl. The 'C' one. What's her name? Car... Carlotta? That it?"

"Carly." This evoked the grumble that often came with this form of conversation. He'd pretty much given up hope of winning the battle. "They're still together. You can totally tell Sammy's going to marry her when they're both 'ready' or whatever." He rolled his eyes and knocked back some more of the beer.

"It's screwed man, what can I say." Eddie nodded his own sympathy to Madsen's situation. "But that's what happens with women when you don't just hit that, and move on, you know what I'm saying?"

"Totally."

"All you can do is be there for them when the blow out comes." He was acting above it all now, as per usual. Eddie, the man who would never be attached... except for that one time. Once bitten, twice shy. Except, not so much shy, as just completely commitment phobic.

And Madsen was the one who would never completely grow up, so until a girl could accept that, he was pretty much in the same boat. It was through this John and Sam had pushed for a meeting, figuring their friends would comiserate and somehow get over themselves.

Well, they'd been right about the comiseration.

"But, see, there's this thing I've been thinking lately." Madsen chose his words carefully, knowing how Eddie would react to it. "Like, with Sammy and Carly, they've got a kid."

"Yeah man, I remember hearing about that." Eddie looked a little disgusted, making a face as he drank some more of his beer. "Kid annoying?"

"No, Julia's totally cool."

"Wow, that's a godsend."

"It is." Madsen laughed as he leaned back in his chair, nodding his head to the guitar in Kashmir while he talked. "But what I've been thinking, is that it's totally sealed when they have a kid. That's it, it's done. They'll always have that connecting them, even if they totally split. Y'know?"

The other man nodded to this, understanding so far. "So you think you're licked, that what you're telling me?"

There was a pause from the skater, then a shrug, and then a nod. "Yeah."

"Total bull." Eddie replied bluntly, setting his can down. "I mean, come on, so what if there's a kid. People split up all the time, the kid never makes a difference on anything."

Madsen shook his head. "No way, dude. Sammy totally loves being a Dad. You can tell he's where he wants to be." As annoying as that knowledge was. "And I have to admit, she's helped him through some shit."

"Oh please. Name one thing."

"He came back an alcoholic."

"Well, okay." Eddie amended, and then dismissed it just as he did so. "So what? You could have helped him through that." And at the silence, he realized how that was sort of... not remotely possible. "Nevermind."

Madsen laughed, not the least bit offended, but at the same was also glad he didn't have to say anything on that one. "Yeah." He grinned and shook his head. "I just think that if it was going to happen, it would have been before Julia was born. So maybe they're going to stay together."

"If that's the case man, I completely pity you."

"I pity me too, dude." Madsen muttered as he drank his beer, and listened to the song switch again. 'Baby, Cool Your Jets'.

The song seemed to have an effect of something between amusement and irritation to Eddie. "Well, look. I haven't completely given up hope with John, maybe you shouldn't with Sam."

"Maybe." Madsen shrugged, and then looked over at him as he nodded his head to the music again. "Or maybe we're totally licked here, and we need to accept defeat or some kind of shit."

The depressing thought caused a wave of silence from the two that lasted a full minute, complete with serious faces and more drinking of beer as the statement was thought over.

"Maybe." Eddie said with an air of finality that he didn't like, and then straightened up again. "Or maybe one day our prayers will be answered. We can always keep hoping." He finished the beer.

Madsen nodded, attempting his usual optimism for the situation at hand as he finished his as well. "Maybe."

Eddie then shook off the bad feeling he was getting, and stood up. "You know what? I say we get out of here, we find ourselves some women, and we party because we know our friends can't. What do you say?"

At this, Madsen grinned, and got up, tossing out both cans. "Totally sounds good to me, dude." He grabbed his keys, walking out the door, and at the last second, the music switched again.

"Dear God in heaven, 'Candle in the Wind'?"

"Dude, shut up!" Madsen fumed, and went back, shutting off the stereo and then walking out the door again.

"Do you just... Do you have to..." Eddie shook his head in exasperation as he shut the door, letting Madsen lock it, then following him to the car.

"I said shut up, dude!"

"Whatever you say, Elton Lover!"

"Madonna Fan!" Madsen shot back as he got in the car, starting it up.

"Damn it, that was my mother's music!" Eddie replied as he got into the car. "It was her cd, it even has her name on it, and I will show you later as proof!"

"Yeah, sure it was." Madsen started driving to the nearest club, rolling his eyes at him in disbelief as he looked to the road.

Eddie sputtered. "At least... At least she's not Elton John!"

"Dude, there is nothing wrong with Elton John!"
