All You Have To Do Is Dream.... Part I

Oct 12, 2008 20:06

This is an old story I wrote based on a dream I had. I was planning on editing the story but at this point I think it's as good as it's going to get. I'm only going to write the first part of it today, it's kind of long.

Two ships traveling across a stormy sea battling the waves and bargaining with Poseidon to let them cross. The two ships enter a cave and as they do the ships sink down to the size of a one person row boat. The cave continues for a long time until they come to a small village that sits on the water. The inhabitants of the village are all sitting on their porches observing the newcomers; sizing them up. The two must answer their questions with dignified and satisfactory answers before being permitted to move on. Soon the two are coasting further into the cave, they do not realize that the cave is slowly changing form. While they coast a snake swimming in the water alongside their boats tells them what would have become of them had they not answered the questions satisfactorily. The two shudder at the thought.
The boats coast themselves through the underground jungle while the kids talk to each other and try to figure out where they are and why. As they go over the previous day aloud to each other their boats coast into a small shore. They get out of their boats and begin walking into the jungle. They walk for a while, their minds elsewhere, and slowly--so slowly they do not even notice--the scenery changes all around them. It is not until the ground becomes noticeably firmer that either of them notice. The boy holds his hand out to the girl and she looks up from her thoughts to see what he is looking at.
In front of them they see a pink road stretching out beyond their view. On this road they see the faint silhouette of a person. The two break out into a run to catch up to the person hoping to find answers as to what this place is and why they are here. They finally catch up to a boy who is about their age, he tells them he does not know where they are, but their experiences of the place are the same--the ship, the cave, the village, everything--they decide to continue walking.
After what seems like hours, the trio arrive to a break in the pathway. There appears to be a large part of the path missing and the space between the two ends is a deep fall down into a thick, yellow substance that looks anything but welcoming. The jump between the two ledges looks too far to make, but they decide to try anyway. The first boy leaps across with ease. The girl barely makes it with help from the boy. The boy they have met along the way does not make it, however. He falls into the yellow substance screaming, and when he hits it his face becomes serene and he is engulfed and disappears. The two remain standing there looking at the substance where the boy had just been, scared of what happened to the boy and what will become of them in this place.
A man appears sitting on a chair beside them. He tells them the boy is relatively fine and that he was supposed to enter the substance--and so where they. He sits and stares at them and waits for them to figure out what to do. The boy jumps back across to the other side and falls in backwards into the substance. The girl screams. She jumps across and grabs the ledge of the other side, holding her leg out for the boy to grab onto, but his face is serene and he is sinking into the substance. Her hands slip while she is watching him in horror and she falls in next to him. She finds that in the substance everything is OK. There are no worries, there is no joy, there is only serenity. Everything goes black.
