I was watching American Horror Story on Hulu when it hit me as to why I couldn't identify with the characters - why I can't identify with lots and lots of characters. And people.
You know how in AHS, the husband is worried about losing the wife?
I can't suspend my disbelief. I don't believe that men can truly love women. I think they feel a sense of pride of ownership to various degrees but I cannot reasonably imagine a situation where a man is truly threatened by the emotional consequences of his actions.
It's not one-sided. I don't think women truly "love" men. We fear men and we need them for financial security and for physical protection from other men. We assign an emotional value to the feeling of security and protection and we call that "love."
I guess I don't believe in romantic love at all.
That explains a lot.
