There's a line in the promotional video that
City Year often shows where a girl says (rather unemotionally) "Every emotion a human can feel, I've felt." And that's the last few days in a nutshell (although in retrospect, not any more than any other day, really).
Today (Sunday), I spent recovering from last night. I lounged around on the futon a bunch, I lounged by the pool. It was great. We also went to a really cool Earth Day festival in downtown Baton Rouge. As one of my co-workers/friends noted, it wasn't full of hippies and beatniks (much like the West Coast celebrations in California and Oregon, which I'm used to). There was live music and plenty of fraternity looking LSU students. So it was a good mix. We also shared a blooming onion (Awesome Blossom as I've known it) and got to talk to a woman about
hybrids and Segways, which I enjoy (moreso the hybrids than the Segway). Then I came home, loaned out my laundry card and watched the West Wing with Aria without falling asleep (for once).
Yesterday (Saturday), we woke up at the same time as always (6:00! Blech!). We got to color in banners with our campers, which was fun. I miss drawing, rather than handing out the paper and markers. The Fire Department came and sprayed the kids with a firehose causing utter chaos and much crying (not helped by the giant inflatable walking fireman). It also brings bad images to my head, but that's just me. It was crazy and kids ("the churren", as we say) have short attention spans. We got to do a bit of painting at the end. Then we came home, went swimming and went to an Irish Car Bomb party. And that's all you get to hear about that (unless you email/call me). Needless to say, everyone was very funny (someone drunkenly ran around looking for "The Responsible One", who replied equally drunkenly "Oh, I'm not the Responsible One tonight".) We did get to have waffles and hang out with my adopted sister's cats the morning after, which was cool. (And OK, so I lied about no details, so bite me)
Friday was workwise the same as Saturday. I mentally almost walked out of camps ('cause tired and 'cause churren are loud and fight and don't sit and cry, all of which is OK, but still, tired) but fortunately, the other staff members are awesome and made me mentally stay (they don't know this since it all happened in my head). Afterwards, we went back to the office. I could hear music from
Live After Five which was like a block away from our office. We got driven home. I miss live music and someone I'm going to Ecuador with said that live concerts are good to see before you leave, so I decided to bike down town. Fortunately, Moosh (the adopted sister) came by and ended up driving Damon (my housemate) and me to the music. We saw the "Cajun Swing" (two different genres in my mind, but they did a good mix of it) band
L'Angèlus (which makes me think of things that other people don't think of 'cause too much
Buffy). They were amazing! Just very into it and good harmonies (I bought a CD. So much for eating this week - I kid, I kid!). There were barefoot people dancing and churren playing and dancing in the fountains. That made me happy. I took off my shoes in solidarity (but Moosh and Damon didn't dance, so neither did I). Moosh tried to make me ask the awesome female bass player out, to which I passed out and threw up on my shoes (kidding). Then we had dinner at Lloyd's seafood restaurant and came home.
And now it's time to go to bed and NOT dream about being dropped off from camps and having to go straight to work (Boo last night's dream)
