Title of Project:_Miami Children's Hospital Volunteer Program__Starting Date:__June 2006__
Project description: What is your project? Be specific about what you will do. Also, explain how it fits into the CAS Program as a whole. What elements of CAS are fulfilled?
Starting in June, I am hoping to start my first CAS project, helping out in the Miami Children's Hospital. This teenage volunteer program is will take place for a minimum of 3 consecutive months, in which I will be chosen to asset the hospital in various ways. After applying, you may choose your area of service, whether it's Bedside Buddies, Art Cart, or Child Care Center. Having human interaction is a main focus for me, which is leading me to choose to become a Bedside buddy, in which I would spend time with children from birth through 21 years of age. By helping the patients and interacting with them, it fullfills the Action section of CAS. To try and entertain the patients, I will be creating new activities and art projects for us to do in the spare time, which is where the Creativity takes place. Aiding the patients with their food and needs will also be relieving the doctors and especially the nurses who can now count on another pair of eyes, ears, and hands for help and assistance, applying to the Service in this project.
Need: Why is your project needed? For whom will it be valuable?
My project is needed because there are many children in the world who are ill or have a disease which doesn't allow them to interact with society in the same way most of us do. By helping out in this hospital, I can help create a relationship with a child, if just one, which can change not only my life, but theirs as well. This project will be most valuable to the patients in the Miami Children's Hospital who don't have many human interactions with people their own age. They can relate to me, as well as I to them, and will enjoy life much more with another caring person by their side.
Final Results: What do you hope to accomplish as the results of your work? What do you expect to learn?
I hope to accomplish great relationships with these children, and I'm also hoping to change at least one person's life. I can't imagine having to be in a hospital room by myself with only a sleeping patient as a friend. I believe that everyone should be cared for and loved, especially in their time of need, such as these kids'. I expect to learn much more about how hospitals work and how to approach new experiences and people. I want to learn to be a lot more compassionate to people and understanding of other people's cultures and beliefs. This project will hopefully bring me closer to people of a different race than my own and help me gain insite to the hardships in the world. Many of these children can help me appreciate many things, not only physically, that I almost always take for granted.
I have reviewed my son’s/daughter’s CAS Project. Additionally, I understand that a total of 150 CAS hours must be completed in order to meet the International Baccalaureate requirement for an IB diploma.
