In a fit of insanity I signed up for a yarn swap. Dye-O-Rama to be precise. It is a 'dye your own sock yarn' swap. I sensibly signed up for the "WTF" rather then the "I'm experienced" group, having not really done any dyeing more complicated then plopping fiber into kool aid. The irony here is that I've never crocheted a sock (though I did finally go find a couple patterns so I can give it a go) -- knitters make socks all the time, but crocheters don't, our fabric is a lot denser generally.
The person I am sending to prefers 'muted male colors' so I'm going to be looking for the Wilson Cake dyes, which have a broader range of colors then Kool Aid. They at least have black, and copper, and dark greens, and brown, so I should be able to get more muted tones then the bright red/blue/green range of Kool Aid. But I think I'm going to end up needing to make a few practice skeins, and I only bought two skeins of yarn initially. Which means I had better learn to make socks! (and then I can join Sockapalooza and really demonstrate a loss of reason :p)
The dying is fun though, and apparently you can dye your yarn in a fashion that gives you 'self striping socks' which looks intriguing.
