Kookaburra chick update and another bird/Poseidon note

(Some more relevent Poseidon stuff from my other journal.)

The kookaburra chick made it through the night, but it was rough. It vomited a few times, but they do regurgitate pellets (like owls) as young as 2 days old, so that may have been similar behaviour but a different consistency due to the food I've given it.

Thanks to herbmcsidhe and tn_lark, kookie now has a name: Caeneus Trident, aka CT for short. :-) Kookaburras are much like cats in that they can easily bear grandiose names. I'd also like to officially announce that CT's gods-parents are herbmcsidhe and tn_lark. :-) I'll keep you two updated on his/her progress- lets cross our fingers because it is very hard to raise newborn chicks. I have one of the better records of success with chicks out of many of the carers I know, but still, this is the youngest kookie I’ve ever had, and you never know exactly what health issues you are facing when they come into care.

CT does have a few cuts that have scabbed over, but I assume that came from the nest. I speculated in the other post that CT was a victim of an attempted siblicide- very common survival tactics in kookaburras. The wounds may have also been caused by cat attack, but as CT survived the night, it looks less likely that a kitty was the cause.

Now I am just keeping little CT warm, clean, fed & cuddled- yes, the temperature needs to remain at 32 degrees Celsius until the feathers emerge & birdie is able to thermo-regulate.

I’ll try to get some pictures up soon.

The other bird note: I am feeling as if Poseidon was also responsible for sending the Spotless Crake to me a few days back. They are rare birds, and no one else has had one in care before, and even how he got here is a mystery- they are birds that live amongst the reeds and lilies. Where he was found there are no dams, ponds or anything about. Closest water was here by me, but the river too would be too strong for him- wrong plant life, wrong insect life, etc.

But he was released successfully yesterday at the duck release sight by Cundletown; I hope he does well and that the gods watch over him.

This isn’t the first time I’ve gotten a rare bird, but I am surprised I got a water bird this time. Coincidentally, my close friends O. & B. got in a baby black swan- another rarity in our area, and if you look back at my journal you’ll see that I’ve had some stunning Poseidon adventures while house-sitting for them. Maybe Poseidon feels that there house is his house now too. ;-)
