Erm...Rounding up the past two years and looking forward to 2012? Just a little reminder for future reference I guess.
2012 Watch List
On-Going Fandoms (Or: Shows I watch every week or else I will die)
Suits - My summer love. Something about Mike being torn between who he was and what he wants to be and his desperation for a mentor while yearning to prove himself just hits all my kinks. Then Harvey had to be so badass and the cast had to be so electric that Gah! The weeks couldn't come fast enough. Fandom: I'm kinda a sucker for suffering-but-hiding-it!Mike and Harvey-Mike Mentor-Mentee We're-loyal-to-each-other dynamics. I wish there were more about Mike's past/old world and how that's still a part of him. I also discovered Tumblr because Patrick Adams had an account. I don't know if I should thank Suits for that or not. But here's something I am grateful for:
White Collar: I wouldn't have even discovered White Collar if I didn't see a clamouring for White Collar/Suits cross-overs, so thank you Suits! Because impossible as it is, I found a show that I liked even more than Suits! The premise allowed grander, more outlandish situations, Peter and Neal's dynamic is brilliant, Peter and El are seriously the strongest, healthiest couple on TV I've ever seen, and all the cultural references and fun and intense caper action! And, it's the only show that I've ever gotten both my parents addicted to -- finally something I can share. Fandom: Love Neal!Whump where whumpage is part of plot, Neal character sketches (past, prison, present), and of course, Neal and his relationship with the Burkes. I'd like to see more introspection into Neal and his motivations and internal struggles. Just posted my first character sketch to work out my feelings after the mid-season finale. I also have bits and pieces of an alternate universe where Peter and Neal are related. I've never written anything AU where there's a fundamental FACT that is changed, so it may never see the light of day.
Merlin: Oh Merlin. No other show can get me to feel as much as this one. Merlin has such enormous potential and (probably unintentionally) disappoints just enough that I find myself raging in frustration and flailing in its awesomeness within the same minute. And for all the inconsistent treatment the characters get, I still can't help but be unhealthily emotionally invested in them. And holy crap Season 4! And the fanwork is amazing. Fandom: Love reveal!fics, the hilarious narrative voice that many authors in this fandom have, and stories written with the feel of an epic poem. I'm desperately wanting more Merlin/Gwen and Merlin-Morgana friendship fics where they get a thrill sneaking around doing magic. Actually wrote stuff and was more prolific that I have been in years due to this season. Not sure if I'm up to tackling longer fic, but I might do more episode close readings.
Show's I'll watch on my own time
Supernatural: Up to Season 5 I was a rabid fan (My roommate and I literally first connected because we were mutual closet Supernatural fans) and the season finale was a beautiful end to a 5-year story arc. Season 6 was rocky and though I'm not a Castiel fan-girl, the show was only alive for me when Castiel was in it. Season 7 has been better for me, surprisingly good, but I think in my heart, Supernatural, and anything I'm interested in reading stopped at Season 5. I'm watching out of devotion now. Fandom: Love Dean!Whump!ManPainAngst (sorry Dean!), stories with a twist/revelation, epic stories about choice and regret and responsibility and family and sacrifice. I've never even had the urge to write for this fandom even though it's probably taken more of my time than any other. IDK why. Maybe because it's already too good.
The Big Bang Theory: Consistently hilarious. I'm waiting for Amy to figure out she's in love with Penny. No fandom activity.
Sherlock: This show is fun and brilliant. That is all. No fandom activity.
Looking forward to:
- Smash
- Legend of Korra
- The Amazing Spiderman
- The Avengers
- The Hobbit
Fandoms that have come and gone
Avatar: The Last Airbender: Ate my brain. Loved it so much. Perfect blend of world-building, drama, humor and action. The cinamatography was beautiful, the music was epic, and the rendering of bending brilliant. Story and character arcs had extremely satisfying payoffs. It just worked. Fandom: Almost anything to do with Zuko, particularly long stories with Zuko-Sokka and Zuko-Toph friendships.
Danny Phantom: Surprisingly good for a Saturday morning cartoon. There was continuity, character development, and some very thought-provoking scenarios, even if they weren't addressed in a deep way. Fandom: Too small sadly. Maybe something to do with the demographics. I particularly like the horror/supernatural genre here.
Inception: The movie was brilliant, but the world it established is even more enticing. Fandom: Love intelligently-written, brain-breaking, reality-questioning fics that simultaneously explore/reveal relationship dynamics. I'm particularly a sucker for Dom-Arthur fics.
Ironman: Billiionaire playboy technology genius growing a conscience. Yes please. Fandom: I didn't dig too deep into the fandom here: I specifically went looking for fic when the movie didn't adaquetly address Tony's fatal condition between Ironman and Ironman II. I didn't find anything, but I did find and devour fics about Tony being kidnapped and the fallout/transformation afterwards. Also love character pieces about how he relates to the world.
