This as a Mal/River sex metaphor is just sheer genius. Because every Mal/River story is really Mal/River/Serenity. That, and lines like this:
Her startled, "Oh!" reminds them both that anyone could walk in at any time, and maybe that's Serenity's way of warning them someone might.
really kept that part of the 'ship (ahahahaha) true for me.

I was kind of proud of that myself. *g* I definitely think Serenity has to be the (not-so-)secret third party in any relationship with Mal, and River totally gets that.

River's reading and feeling of people's thoughts worked very well in that less-direct way. See gets everything, and people don't think in coherent sentences.
Zoe was beautiful, and Kaylee, too.
