A few of my aids from the occupational therapist turned up this morning, I've been sent a stool for the bathroom, chair raisers (the armchair is so low and soft that even my in-shape other half has trouble getting out of it), foam cutlery handles to make it easier to hold my fork when my hands are rebelling against me, and a hook to do up buttons ( Read more... )

I just use the wheelchair outdoors at the minute, although if it comes to it that I need it indoors as well we should be able to manage. There's no a great deal of space, but it's workable, and the house is all on one level, so no stairs to manage! The OT actually told me that they don't normally give wheelchairs out to people who only need them for outdoor use, normally it needs to be an indoor + outdoor need, but because of my condition and my obvious mobility problems they were going to make sure I got one.

There are still a surprising amount of non-disabled friendly places here in NI. My main GP surgery is fine, but for evening appointments it only opens Monday and Friday, if you need an appointment Tuesday or Thursday you have to go to the sister surgery in a nearby village, which has a steep step to get in and so is in no way wheelchair friendly. There was a new shopping outlet built a few years ago near to where I live, but there's cobblestone everywhere - again not wheelchair friendly. We try to stick to the smoother paving slabs right at the edges, but the cobbles cut across these every several slabs as a 'design feature'. *Rolls eyes*
