So I'm introducing my neighbour to Buffy and we started all the way from the very beginning, I hadn't seen the premiere in years! Ramblings on the season in general
.
I can't believe how very "Clueless" the premiere felt! the dialogue alone was so valley girl "neg, negly!" and SMG's Rachel hair(!!!!) and the skater boys, it's just all so 90's! Thankfully, the 90s weren't as goofy as the 80s but I didn't realize the 90's signature was as strong as the 80's signature. I have to say, I can see why I didn't watch it when it first aired b/c it was so damn goofy! I mean Preying Mantis', Hyena possession, an internet demon? WTF Joss? Seriously! It had its strong points, I love Willow and Xander and Giles so much, David Boreanaz is so YOUNG in this (!!!!!) and I don't hate Buffy yet! and Cordelia is MEAN!!! Really really mean! As first seasons go it's not as strong as Angel or even as strong as Firefly but it was still pretty damn good and the last three episodes were really awesome and not just in a "it's first season so I'll cut it a break way", but in a this is really awesome way! I'm glad I came into it during the summer reruns of third season, I wouldn't've been able to handle the break between s2 and s3 *L*
"The Pack", for all its silly storyline is a really strong episode, we get to see some serious character development with Xander. "Nightmares" is fabulous because we get so much of who the characters are out of what they truly fear. Giles' fear of becoming incompetent and unable to perform his duties as a watcher, Buffy's fear of being buried alive (Hello, Foreshadowing!) and being vamped is so telling that while she hates her calling she's dedicated to it even though she knows it will probably end badly for her. I think my favorite episode for the season, aside from the finale, has to be "Witch" it's just a solid episode all around good story, good character development, dialogue, plot twists it's all good and the end where Amy's mom is stuck in the trophy is just hilarious! I love it! :) Buffy bouncing around to Macho Man is too funny , as is Xander's assertion that "It's all good. He took care of it' when Willow bursts in after Amy and her mom've bodyswitched never fails to crack me up. I love Xander, probably best of all the Scoobies I think. The B/A storyline this time around is just so painfully obviously Buffy's first love and I see now why it couldn't work for them past season four once she grew up a little more, but if given the chance I really feel like they both could've changed to accomodate a more mature relationship. It's funny how she was Angel's first love too, two hundred and forty odd years down the line, we really see this in "Angel" his line "You're even pretty when you go to sleep!" said in this amazed tone that was just so loaded with how much of a crush he had on her. It's really interesting watching it not from the point of view of a teenager, not being wrapped up in the emotional turmoil of that time shared by the characters gives me a distance to really evaluate the story in a way I didn't have the first time I watched it.
