So this started off as a quick ep review and turned into a 600 word ramble that's not over yet *L*
Bones first few forays into its 3rd season has so far been done with grace and aplomb. By junior year most shows have settled into their characters and their storylines. The established pattern is followed iwth nary a break from routine except possibly for the season premieres and finales - See Crossing Jordan and Grey's Anatomy. And in some cases the comfort of the familliar works for the audience... or it lulls them into complacency. Bones however is still reaching, still growing. It's always had shaky premieres but this year's was a solid story - entertaining, suspenseful, they didn't do too great of a job on the climax of the story but that's okay as it's going to be an arc this season I take it and most importantly it had great returning character dynamics that are still changing, developing. Booth and Cam's new friendship, Bones' protectiveness of Zack, even Angeland Hodgins' relationship is evolving. They're not just the token happy couple, they're learning each other in new ways, how the other will react to certain situations (re: finding Angela's husband) and actions (re: Hodgins sudden onsent of drool over the bombshell bomb tech)/ Granted I'm still not feeling the Hodgin/s Angela vibe (and by GOD he's never allowed to call her Angie EVER again) but they still get kudos for trying here. And they're not building the Bones/Booth dynaic to a blow up point and then leaving us there (Hello Harm & Mac of JAG) but are actually developing itin a realistic, enjoyable and entertaining way while still keeping us wanting the UST to become Rst. I'm going to get annoyed if this couples therapy for partners rumor comes true because I really didn't like their psych last season, he was far too much of a cartoon psychologist and as a psych major it pissed me off.
I really like the way that The Illuminati storyline was just subtly mentioned in ep 2, I'm glad htey're not just going to forget about it til it comes up again but give us little reminders every now and then.
Brennan and her dad's reconciliation storyline is in fact quite awesome as well although I'm wondering if we're supposed to be getting the impression Bones and her dad didn't spend a lot of time together after she was 5 or so as all his stories are of wee bitty bones not even 10 y/o Bones but all 5 and under. Bones calling him "Max" in theepismackedofclassic teen tantrums at a parent. While the adult implications of that were quite apparent, it still felt like 15 y/o Bones screaming at her dad, for which I applaud ED greatly.
This leads me to one of my biggest peeves with this storyline though. THey keep acting like Max and Ruth left Bones as a child. She was FIFTEEN! And I"m guessing you'd'a been hard pressed to find a more together fifteen year old. Yes they abandoned her but she was old enough to take car eof herself, it wasn't like she was 5! It just goes completely against what I see as Bones' nature. She's a very capable person yet she actslike her parents abandoning her left her completely helpless. Which I suppose is a great contradiction that helps make Bones more real and human to us for what are we if not complete contradictions by nature. It also gives us great insight into WHY Temperance is so together now and why she plays everything so close to the chest. Seeing the psychological results of sucha deep emotional trauma is fascinating. The baby steps she and Max are taking towards each other are even ore interesting and I'm glad she didn't just forgive him like Sydney forgave Irina on Alias. I"m going to enjoy watching the reconstruction of this relationship, my only complain really is that Russ isn't around asI liked him but I guess they can really only have so many storylines going.
In other news Pushing Daisies is ADORABLE and you all should watch it!
