Well, I did the first show on Sunday late afternoon.
I had a voice, after taking care not to use it for 2.5 days.
My voice was a bit strained and hoarse, mind you, but it was good enough to do a show!
And the show went fairly well, too.
A reviewer from SEE magazine was in the audience and reviewed the performance.
Here's the review:
This play was adapted from playwright Daniel MacIvor's original one-man show in order to accommodate performer [Rach]elle Fordyce. I'm not sure how extensively the original script has been altered, but I can't imagine it being performed by anyone else, let alone a male; Fordyce is a natural fit for the part - a woman wisecracking and free-associating her way through a nervous breakdown. She's endearingly awkward in the way that all of us sort of are. ... there are many really beautiful observations and moments that make the hour-long session in Fordyce's company very worthwhile... three and a half stars
(yeah, they made a typo on my name. Actually, they called me Danielle instead of Rachelle. Oh well.)
I cut out the parts that talk about the play itself. I think I may have gotten a higher star rating had the reviewer liked the play itself more, but whatevs; I think it's still a pretty decent review. And it's certainly quite the compliment to say, "I can't imagine it being performed by anyone else, let alone a male". WOW!
Had a show tonight, too. I think it went well. I'm always very self-critical though. A touring performer saw it and later he bumped into me and told me he loved it and hugged me and I was like "WHOA!" I mean, I didn't even know this guy and he praised it. So, that's pretty cool!
Either way, I just hope I can get enough people out to see the show. With the first show cancelled, I'm worried about not breaking even in reagrds to covering all the costs associated with this show. :P Costs are in the $2000 range. If I break even I'll be happy - although I'd certainly be happier if I made a little money to... you know... live on. heh. Oh, the life of an artist. ;)
I hope Edmonton Journal gives us a decent review, too... here's hoping!
Well, that makes two shows down... three more to go!
