So I've spent today debating whether or not atheists are more or less fervent in their beliefs than those that believe in religion due to a question a friend of mine asked me today in response to something I asked him (any religion for argument's sake -- not a cult mind you but a religion; and I'll save the religion vs. cult debate for another time).
So of course to help me think I goof off. It works. That's why I have toys at my desk -- I need something to distract myself to actually be of use. To date I have a ram, a skunk, a bear, a tater tot, finger puppets, and a love monkey (well he's a monkey -- the love part was just more of a description) with Mardi Gras beads in a beer stein at my desk at work. At home I don't have as many toys (but I do have pretty pretty figurines). Still in my debate of the belief intensity of atheists I am now surfing the web for random stuff to distract me. Here's what I've found:
(note I'm putting the links in because I'm tired and don't feel like embedding them properly)
Cecil Adams on the violent roots of fairy tales (I knew of the macabre roots of children's songs but not this although it doesn't terribly surprise me either)
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/071026.html Dismembered Barbie parts as jewelry. Okay disclaimer here: when I was a kid I *loved* Barbie. But I had a terrible time putting her clothes on -- the clothes were too small to get over her big head. So I'd pop off Barbie's head, put the clothes on, and then bring a headless Barbie to my mom while holding the head in the other hand going "Fix this". My mom always did but I'm pretty sure she worried about my future and my propensity for ripping off Barbie's head. Anyways it's a an odd disturbing link

Overheard in New York -- obviously I have to give props to my hometown. I knew of the book, should have figured they'd have a blog too

Anyways now it's getting late and I have to get up early so that's it for now.
