I know it seems amazing, but mark this as the first time I've disagreed with a fellow Democrat--well, not really the first time, but still... CNN.com is running an article about how the Department of Homeland Security is reallocating terrorism grants. Among the changes is a decrease in funds directed toward New York and Washington, D.C. Naturally, this annoyed Senator Schumer.
"Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, complained that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff had 'promised to fight to increase New York's formula, and here it is, we're being whacked with a two-by-four and we don't hear a peep out of Secretary Chertoff.'
"'Other states that have very little problems got an increase,' he said at a news conference. 'Georgia got a 40 percent increase. Somehow this administration thinks that Georgia peanut farmers are more at risk than the Empire State Building. Something is dramatically wrong.'"
Now, I agree that New York City should get the majority of Homeland Security grants--and they are, $124.5 million's worth. In fact, Georgia didn't even make it into the list of the "Top 5 Grant Totals." However, we do have Atlanta, and guess what's in Atlanta? The CDC (among other sites), you moron. I'd say that merits a little extra money for protection. I mean, could he have made a more ignorant and offensive argument? Yup, there's no one down here but us peanut farmers. I wouldn't worry about us either--what terrorist would want to attack a site like the CDC or Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport?
It isn't enough that the Democrats have been acting astonishingly weak in the past few years; now some of them are going for the just plain stupid act. Please, God, let this party clean up in the next year or so, or we'll be campaigning on nothing more than the "we-didn't-cause-this-mess" platform.
