I think I've got it! After looking at this one: http://www.uvm.edu/~hag/sca/tudor/choward.jpg I know what I need to do and I was right the "roll" is wrong it needs to be flat. Norris the crack boy seems to be right again! I just was being obtuse when I read his description.
