I've been challenged by Sareh to write a Aqua/Vanitas where ...it doesn't turn into porn.
I'm up for the challenge! Here we go!
Aqua didn't know how long it had been since she was consumed by the darkness. She knew she had walked a long path where heartless were gathering all around, waiting for that moment to strike, rip her heart out and make her one of their own. She continued to keep her guard up...continued to strive forward. Yet there were days when she felt she should just fade away into the dark.
She had failed to protect her friends. Fading away would be the just way of ending her life.
Just when she was ready to lay down her Master's keyblade, two other blades came to her aide. They fought off the heartless that gathered and reminded her to never give hope.
Her journey down that seemingly endless path brought her to a lifeless ocean. Grey water lapped up against the shore and she found that to be the perfect spot to sit and rest. She stayed there, sitting down to analyze every step she made since she became a Master. Where did she go wrong...what could she have done to prevent this?
"Enjoying the scenery?" a familiar voice asked.
Aqua's blood ran cold. She looked off to the side before slowly turning her head. It couldn't be...she had destroyed him. She had plunged her keyblade straight into his body of darkness and watched him fade away.
Vanitas stared at her with a smug look on his face.
"Miss me, Master Aqua?" his tone was laced with sarcasm as he looks at her.
Aqua's first instinct is to fight him, to wipe that stupid look off his face and make him taste defeat again. But what good would it do her? She was in a land where nothingness and darkness met. If she killed him, he would only come back like a damn cockroach.
"Shouldn't you be dead." it wasn't a question, only a snappy statement. Of all the people who had to wander into this little patch of darkness, it had to be him.
Yellow eyes lit up with humor.
"I don't play by your rules--"
"You cheat instead." Her words silence him for a moment. He was caught off guard by the statement. Aqua knew it was true. He tried to 'merge' with Ven, and when that didn't work he wanted to have a place in her heart. She promptly shot down that request.
The statement had more of an effect on him that Aqua realized. Instead of annoying her, he stayed quiet, leaning against the dead palm tree. Maybe he knew in the back of his mind that there was no use in bothering someone who had accepted their fate. She would be forever bound to this place...just like him.
One day flowed seamlessly into the next. He spat out an insult or two, trying to get a rise out of Aqua. She said nothing, deciding to discourage his behavior by ignoring him. It worked on dogs and children, and would certainly work on him.
Then one day when there was a slight breeze in the air and the ocean tide touched her shoes she asked him, "...Why don't you go back into Ven's heart?"
"Tried that Sweetheart, don't you remember?" he chided.
"I meant without taking control. Go back into that hole Mas--..Xehanort created."
There was a long stretch of silence from Vanitas. Maybe he was tuning her out or ignoring her. Still, Aqua continued on.
"Afraid to go back--"
"Why...should he be his own person and I can't?" There was no sarcasm...nothing in his voice that made him seem evil in anyway. There was a hint of frustration in his voice, like he was a child, trying to understand a concept his young could not grasp just yet.
If he had asked such a question months ago her reply would've been that he was a cold son of a bitch who didn't deserve to be alive. For all the suffering he caused, he shouldn't be his own person. He should be grateful to have a place in someone's heart.
But now because of their time spent together, without fighting only harsh words and insults that didn't amount to anything...
"Because you need each other to be a whole person. Light and dark...need each other to survive." For what is light without darkness and vice-versa? Darkness itself wasn't evil, but those who use it to instill fear made it that way.
"...I don't need anyone."
Then why are you still here with me? "If that's what you want believe."
"Tch."
