I mean, the main, fairly obvious problem with Hook is that he’s not a well-developed character. When has he ever said he liked anything aside maybe from Milha? He doesn’t have ANY OPINIONS or THOUGHTS. He just continually exists and periodically mutters things about killing Rumplestiltskin.

To move on to your actual comments…

Really, Hook is 300 years old too? I am confused.

There’s no doubt that what went down between Rumple and Milha is more painful than what went down between Hook and Milha. You know that I’m willing to excuse just about anything Rumple does (though it clearly only made him more of a monster and heightened his emotional issues). (Also: failing to kill Peter Pan? You are so confusing.) He really only halfheartedly tried to steal Belle away; he barely tried.

Sidebar: if we’re thinking about Rumple’s seasonal arc, he’s rehumanizing himself and he’s more focused than ever on finding Bae. Belle has been a big part of his life. What happens to him when she is gone? So if she exists to push him into a better place, it makes sense story-wise to take her out of commission for a while, to take Rumple to new places. Furthermore, Hook obviously only exists as a tool of Cora’s and to act as foil to Rumple. He’s not a developed character. He just exists to help the other characters on their arcs.

You mention how we never see him showing any emotions. Ditto! Like I said, not a developed character. His actions have little motive beyond revenge on Rumple, and even that is poorly calculated. More poorly calculated than some of Spike’s plans! We have never seen him enjoy anything or say he likes or believes in anything: HE JUST IS. He wanders around scowling saying he wants nothing more than to get revenge on Rumple, but he isn’t even trying! He is Cora’s flunky until he can get his revenge, but he’s not concocting plans, questioning her movements, or even showing a real reason to be devoted to her cause. I think his scowling and blandness and dirty tricks would be more interesting if they were balanced by real emotions: sharing a fond memory of Milha with Cora (which she would be uninterested in), or struggling with growing emotions for Cora as he tries to carry out his revenge, or even revealing a deep, religious love for trickery. He’s kind of like Gob Bluth except without the little facets of character.

It might be interesting, for example, if, like Gob Bluth, he resorts to trickery, lies, and attempting to sleep with all women automatically. But he doesn’t do this. He doesn’t even stick to the few guns he has. He will resort to trickery one moment and then the next moment be drifting along vaguely in Cora’s wake.

To me, his biggest character trait is that he’s a weenie. He’s hiding in Cora’s shadow, he shoots Belle in the back as revenge on Rumple, he only fought Rumple to begin with after lying to him and then shames him in an unfair fight, and as you said, he pretended to be a survivor of a massacre.

I am hopeful that Jane Espensen’s next episode will shed some light on his situation for us, although since he was hit by a car, that seems unlikely.

Although I am very sad that he shot Belle, I remain hopeful for her future. I was more pissed at Hook as a character when he stole Aurora’s heart. I was ready for him to die.

Really, it was upsetting, but plot-wise, this serves as a means of keeping Rumple away from his goal for at least a few more episodes. He obviously can’t leave Belle alone like this, and can you see him leaving her to find Bae even after she is stabilized?

Yeah…Rumple will NEVER blame himself.

It’s true, most people either see Rumple as a smooth-talking threat or don’t notice him at all. Unlike Regina, he is perfectly happy keeping to himself and working on his own things, so I think most people don’t even think of him of as much a threat as she was. (Also, he never tried to rule people.)
