(I should point out I wrote most of this right after watching, hence the slightly hyper reactions to things)

Just read some very interesting discussion of Emma's romantic prospects. Specifically, how both Jefferson and August wanted something from her-their interest in her was because she was special, not because of who she was. Neither of those have so far actually been treated as romantic on the show. Jefferson has the drugging and stalking and rape and madness vibe, and doesn't seem to give a crap about Emma honestly. (I think it would be a lot more fun to ship him with Regina, personally. Especially in flashbacks to when they first met.) August did a little vague flirting early on (arguably. I personally feel he just didn't know how to approach her at first and she interpreted it as flirting, but ymmv), but that's it as far as romance for the two goes, and their relationship became a sibling-esque friendship. Graham, on the other hand, was always approaching Emma with a sweet flirting vibe, both characters reacting as if they were interested in the other. Graham didn't want anything from her. He was unaware of her 'specialness' and just seemed to like her for who she was, enjoying talking to her and offering her the deputy post because he believed she could do it. Their kisses must have been something resembling True Love for his memories to return (despite Emma being basically the personification of True Love, I doubt she could just go around kissing anyone to restore their memories and break their curses. It was probably beefed up with her specialness, but there was something there to begin with), and once he started going crazy with his identity breakdown, she was always concerned and supportive and wanting to work through it with him, as opposed to the active resistance she later has to August and Jefferson talking crazy talk about the curse. There was also a gif set pointing out parallels between Emma/Graham and Snow/Charming. Now, I'm not naïve enough to assume that the parallels mean something when there's nothing else on the show about it (thanks, Glee), but it's interesting. Although I really ought to stop with the whole Graham thing and resign myself to the fact that he's extremely unlikely to come back from the dead, and Emma is extremely unlikely to make it through another season without a new love interest.

Sometime later I will add my thorough yet futile speculation about Dr. Whale.
