On My Way

So apparently I do have some thoughts about Glee.

1. Quinn's car accident was gimmicky and annoying. Because Glee is supposed to be about 'don't stop believing', about a bunch of misfit losers working through their shit via song and finding happiness and fulfillment through said creative expression. Quinn pulled herself together, she got into Yale, she had friends, and she was happy with her life. I call that mission accomplished. What, exactly, is a car accident--a random act of RIB--supposed to add to her character development? Why not give the new drama to some neglected characters like Tina or Puck? It's really obvious this is just supposed to make fans flip over the hiatus. Guess what? I do not care about this plot. My reaction is not "oh no, Quinn OMG" but "really, Glee? Really?"

2. The Karofsky plot was mostly good. The acting was 100%, the problem is no build-up. Why are we expected to care that much about a character who dropped off the face of the earth for most of the season? Yes, his excellent acting makes us care, but bringing back a character just for this plot? Gimmicky and lame. I would have much preferred to see little snippets of his life and this problem building over several episodes. You know, character development rather than just a shocking twist. The other problem I will get into later. But overall it was very good.

3. The issue with Kurt. Why can't he have a decent plot? Let's review his plots for the season: a. Kurt is not masculine enough for politics or musical theater, b. Kurt is pressured into sex before he's ready, c. Everyone wants Kurt's boyfriend, no one wants Kurt except for a guy he doesn't find attractive, who bullied him mercilessly, and then acted rather stalky. Missing: Kurt's strength, acknowledgement of Kurt's awesomeness.

4. Jane Lynch is awesome. However, no matter how good her acting is, I cannot take Sue seriously at all anymore. Is she actually supposed to be pregnant? God I hope not. Why didn't they just have her do that tough-love thing she used to do? Why can't she still behave like an antagonist every week while actually secretly liking them and trying to push them to be better? She used to have that with Kurt. Instead, now, every damn week it's a dumb gimmicky new plot for Sue, and I just don't enjoy her scenes anymore.

5. I understand that Rachel and Finn are the main characters, and I love them together and all, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP WITH THE FINCHEL PLOTS. I know it's realistic for couples, especially young couples, to fight, and I'm glad they keep working through stuff instead of breaking up all the time, but they seem to have stupid relationship issues EVERY SINGLE EPISODE and I am SO SICK OF IT. I DO NOT CARE ANYMORE. JUST TURN THE CAMERA TOWARD ANOTHER COUPLE. WHY IS THIS STILL AN A PLOT?

6. No Samcedes whatsoever--hooray! Sam was also awfully gay this episode: he seemed like he was putting himself in Karofsky's shoes when wondering how he hit rock bottom, and he blew a kiss at the Warblers! It makes me happy, but I still strongly suspect the writers are just messing with us.

Also 7. Why the hell does Faberry get lines about 'does Finn really make you happy?' when Kum--who are friends, too, and living in the same house to boot--are barely allowed to make eye contact, much less talk to each other? I'm not even talking about real plot anymore. Even the crackiest of ships gets fanservice except for Kum! How is that fair? Or is the constant stream of gay around Sam supposed to be our fanservice? (Hint: It's not.)

Also 8. Will's story about his attempted suicide as a kid was really effing dumb. He would have to have been severely depressed or stressed or pressured or something already for the story to even make sense.

So overall, I think the episode was fairly high quality, but there was way too much melodrama and 'very special episode'-ness in it. Now, I like high-quality character trauma and development, but there was just way too much overblown drama for a show that's still categorized as 'comedy'. And not enough development. And there's way too much time spent on Finn and Rachel for a show with that many characters. I don't care that this is their last season maybe, they have had their plot and development, you need to stop tacking on new pages to the end of their stories. Just leave them alone, let them be in the background for an arc! Argh. Anyway, I'm sorry but that's just how I feel about it. What do you think?
