Big Bang: Help me choose a prompt so I can start writing?

Feb 11, 2013 02:59

So I'm really excited to have signed up for Paperlegends!  It's my first time writing something this long, and I'm definitely nervous.

But... I need to pick a kinkmeme prompt so I can start on my story...  I've got three choices.  Help me pick one?

1. KMM 30: Arthur/Merlin, Arthur/Gwen(past), Merlin/Uther, Gwen/Lancelot
Merlin and Lancelot didn't make it in time to stop Arthur and the other knights from going to the Isle of the Blessed to close the rift between the two worlds. When they arrive there, they find that their friends have disappeared, and the veil is closed again.  Returning to Camelot, Uther is shocked by his son's death and is forced to step up again to be King, Lancelot marries Gwen, while Merlin falls into depression, thinking he has no purpose any more.  After Merlin saves Camelot and reveals himself, Uther decides not to kill him, understanding finally that it was thanks to Merlin that they had survived all these years. Instead he makes him his Court Sorcerer, and after a while, as their relationship slowly builts to a romantic one, a prince and his consort.  And then, Arthur comes back.

I really like Uther/Merlin transitioning to Arthur/Merlin here.  I've always been a bit fascinated with the Uther/Merlin pairing, even though it's not really to my taste.  I've been thinking about this prompt for a while, and I'm worried about getting Uther's character right.  The one thing I can't for the life of me figure out is how I would get Uther to accept Merlin's magic.  I just... can't find a feasible way to make it work given Uther's canon personality.  I haven't decided if it's worth it for me to write it anyway and cross that bridge when I come to it...  Most of the focus in this would be the after Arthur comes back part, but I'm expecting the Uther/Merlin portion to take up a chunk of story too.

2. KMM 31: Arthur/Merlin, Merlin/Other
They lived in a small town, where everyone tends to gossip and know their neighbors business. Arthur is the son of one of the richest men in town and thus popular, talented, and loved by the school. Merlin is the son of the town whore and shunned by nearly everyone - and the few friends he has are mostly people who pitied him originally. He is, though, one of the smart kids in school although no one was willing to look past it.  Arthur spent high school mocking him and possibly bullying him, or at least turning the other check when Merlin was bullied by others. But it wasn't because of the reasons everyone assumed (his mother) - it was because Arthur felt a strong attraction to Merlin and didn't know how to handle it. Merlin mostly tried to ignore him, although Arthur made that impossible.  After high school, Merlin left for university, escaping the small town prejudice. Years later, he returned home - successful, possibly rich or getting there, with a boyfriend/girlfriend he thought he loved and considering marrying. Just, nothing went as planned: old peers refused to acknowledge that he was anything more than the whore's son, his S/O was horrified by Merlin's mother, and there was Arthur, still gorgeous and still attracted to Merlin, and the only one who seemed to actually recognize that Merlin was more than his birth.

In my mind, I would focus less on the past (cover it a bit in flashbacks I'm sure) and more on the present.  On Merlin's renewed feeling of loneliness and once again being an outcast.  But Arthur's there this time, and Arthur's more mature so something could actually happen between them.  I just have this scene in my head where Arthur's befriended Merlin (maybe more?) and is trying to get Merlin to accept his help, but Merlin just digs in his heels and is determined to take care of himself as he has done all his life.

3. KMM 10: Arthur/Merlin. Arthur/Morgana.
Arthur, Merlin and Morgana are childhood friends. While Arthur has always been attracted to Morgana, he is completely unaware of Merlin's feelings for him. Arthur's father Uther decides to move to New York with his family to take up a new job, so Arthur has to go away from his friends. He makes Morgana promise to write to him via e-mail. But Morgana soon becomes occupied with other things, so it's the loyal Merlin who writes to Arthur; but he always signs with Morgana's name to help Morgana keep her promise. Arthur and Merlin have many things in common, and their e-mails bring them very close to each other. 10 years later, Arthur returns to London for a short vacation. By now, he's in love with "Morgana" ( aka Merlin ).  When the three of them finally meet, Arthur is completely besotted with Morgana, who is as vivacious as ever. However, during the two weeks of his vacation, he cannot help but notice that the real Morgana is completely different compared to the Morgana he knew from the e-mails. He also starts to like Merlin, without realising that he is the one he is really in love with.
Arthur returns to New York, where Merlin coincidentally arrives for an interview ( New York University ), and there he discovers that it was Merlin who wrote all the e-mails.

With this one, Arthur and Morgana definitely wouldn't be related.  Merlin and Morgana might.  Or maybe they'd be roommates.  So Merlin has access to Morgana's computer.  I'm not sure about the Merlin going for an interview at NYU thing or Arthur only finding out then.  My idea for this prompt diverges after Arthur returning to London for his vacation.  Most of the elements mentioned in the prompt will be included in some form... but the timeline will probably change and more Merthur.

Any thoughts?  Which do you guys think I should pick?  Which would you want to read the most?  Any comments are welcome!  But I make no promises about which I'll actually end up writing.  :)
