Ficlet: Half empty or half full? Write a fic that best shows us how your muse looks at the world.

“Take a look at the glass.”

Sariel raised an eyebrow. Metatron had set a glass of water before her. It was half filled with water.

“What about it?”

He gave her his usual smile. “Observe it. Tell me what you see.”

She did so, crouching down to stare at it, then moving so she had a bird’s eye view of the glass. Sariel then squatted, so that she was looking at it on eye level.

“It’s half way full. I don’t get the point.”

“Would you say that it’s closer to being half full or half empty?”

“Dunno.” Sariel straightened up. “Sir, how does this relate to my training?”

“It doesn’t,” Metatron replied, his voice becoming slightly irritated. “Just answer the question, Sariel.”

“It’s perfectly balanced,” Sariel said. She was using her favourite monotone voice, one that moved quickly, with a hint of annoyance, perfect for recitation and indulging her instructor’s love of philosophy. “It is neither half full nor half empty. This perception changes depending on your angle. One only notices the perfect balance when they stare eye level at the glass, analyzing the water line. Small changes from people’s footsteps causes the water to move, of course, but for the most part, it stays at the half and half level.”

The seraph nodded, giving her a nod of approval and a brief, “Heh.” Sariel crossed her arms.

“What was the point of that?”

Metatron stood up and began to walk towards his door. He motioned for Sariel to follow. “Typically people either see that glass as half full, indicating a positive attitude towards existence or as half empty, indicating a negative view of life. I was curious to how you would see it.”

“But you’ve told me time changes perception.” Sariel followed after him, into the hallway. “I’m what, ten? Why not just wait till I’m older?”

“Curiosity,” he replied. “Curiosity to see how your perception changes.”

Sariel gave a frustrated sigh. “Can we get back to beating things up now?”

“Yes.”
